Practical guidelines for validation of supervised machine learning models in accelerometer‐based animal behaviour classification

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Overfitting is a major challenge in supervised machine learning and requires thorough validation to detect. A review of the animal accelerometer‐based behaviour classification literature revealed most studies did not adequately validate for overfitting.

An integrative strategy used by the aphid Uroleucon formosanum to counter host sesquiterpene lactone defense: Insights from combined genomic and transcriptomic analysis

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
We report the first high‐quality chromosome‐level genome assembly for the aphid Uroleucon formosanum, a serious pest that infests lettuce in eastern Asia. A combination of comparative genomic analyses and RNA‐seq transcriptome profiling suggests that U. formosanum employs integrative mechanisms to cope with host plant‐derived sesquiterpene lactone (STL)

Rowing jellyfish contract to maintain neutral buoyancy

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters, 2018
: Jellyfish are easily carried by ocean currents, yet most studies on jellyfish focus on the kinematics in a quiescent fluid. In this experimental and theoretical study, we film six species of rowing jellyfish in a range of background flow speeds at the ...

UV‐Induced Fluorescence in the Balance: Mate Choice and Predation Risk in the Female Ornamented Jumping Spiders

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study investigates the potential adaptive advantages of female‐specific UV‐induced fluorescence in male mate‐choice and predation risk, as fitness costs, using two species of ornate jumping spiders Phintella vittata and Ph. bifurcilinea. Our findings provide empirical evidence of a trade‐off: While fluorescence enhances male mate preference, it ...

The genome of the giant Nomura’s jellyfish sheds light on the early evolution of active predation

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2019
Background Unique among cnidarians, jellyfish have remarkable morphological and biochemical innovations that allow them to actively hunt in the water column and were some of the first animals to become free-swimming.

Chromosome‐Level Genome Assembly of the Loach Goby Rhyacichthys aspro Offers Insights Into Gobioidei Evolution

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The percomorph fish clade Gobioidei is a suborder that comprises over 2200 species distributed in nearly all aquatic habitats. To understand the genetics underlying their species diversification, we sequenced and annotated the genome of the loach goby, Rhyacichthys aspro, an early‐diverging group, and compared it with nine additional Gobioidei

Jellyfish collagen stimulates maturation of mouse bone marrow-derived dendritic cells

open access: yesJournal of Functional Foods, 2015
Jellyfish has recently attracted much attention for various applications, including functional foods due to its abundance of collagen. Jellyfish collagen, extracted from Nemopilema nomurai, was found to stimulate murine macrophage-like J774.1 cells ...

“We, to Them, Are Their Heroes”: Narratives of Rescue in White Australian Veterans' Memories of the Vietnamese

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Politics &History, EarlyView.
This article examines white Australian veterans' views and memories of Vietnamese people in three stages: during the war, after the Fall of Saigon, and upon return to Vietnam. Drawing on original oral histories with veterans who returned to Vietnam, this article shows that veterans' characterisations of Vietnamese were fundamentally about defining ...
