Two-fluid jets and wakes

Physics of Fluids, 2004
Similarity solutions for laminar two-fluid jets and wakes are derived in the boundary-layer approximation. Planar and axisymmetric fan jets as well as classical and momentumless planar wakes are considered. The interface between the immiscible fluids is stabilized by the action of gravity, with the heavier fluid, taken to be a liquid, placed beneath ...

Discharge of buoyant fluid jets and particle-laden jets into stratified ambient fluid

2009
Extraction of petroleum from oil sands generates a vast quantity of fine tailings. A common form of tailings treatment involves discharging the tailings at an angle of minus a few degrees into a tailings pond. Tailings ponds generally have a two-layered structure involving an upper layer of clear water separated by a pycnocline from a lower layer of ...

Fluid Jet Polishing

2003
The goal of this thesis research was to investigate the possibilities and limitations of the Fluid Jet Polishing (FJP) technique. FJP is a new optical fabrication technique that is capable of making shape corrections and reducing the surface roughness of glass and other materials. The principle of operation is that a mixture of water and abrasives (the

A laminar jet in a rotating fluid

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1965
A solution is presented of the asymptotic flow due to a point source of momentum in a uniformly rotating unbounded environment. Under the condition that the relative swirl velocity of the jet is small compared with the ambient swirl velocity, the equations of motion reduce to a set of linear equations.
