Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjawab kritik John Wansbrough terhadap sistematika Al-Qur`an, khususnya pernyataan Wansbrough bahwa ayat-ayat Al-Qur`an tidak memiliki susunan yang teratur.  Menurut Wansbrough dalam Qur`anic Studies (1977), Wansbrough percaya bahwa Al-Qur`an tidak memiliki kerangka kerja atau struktur yang koheren.
