Antibiotic Spacers in Shoulder Arthroplasty: Comparison of Stemmed and Stemless Implants. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Antibiotic spacers in shoulder periprosthetic joint infection deliver antibiotics locally and provide temporary stability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences between stemmed and stemless spacers. Methods: All spacers placed

The rate of 2nd revision for shoulder arthroplasty as analyzed by the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR)

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica, 2021
Background and purpose — The increase in shoulder arthroplasty may lead to a burden of revision surgery. This study compared the rate of (2nd) revision following aseptic 1st revision shoulder arthroplasty, considering the type of primary, and the class ...

The Failure Rate of Internal Fixation Increases With Sagittal Displacement of the Femoral Head: A Retrospective Study

open access: yesHealth Care Science, EarlyView.
This study found that the degree of femoral head sagittal displacement is linked to the risk of internal fixation failure in femoral neck fracture. Measurements of the sagittal tilt angle of the femoral head (STAFH) using CT‐3D imaging showed high reliability (ICC = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96–0.98). Patients with excessive sagittal displacement (anterior tilt ≥

Advanced Testing Protocols Simulate Failures and Validate Antioxidant Polyethylene in Ankle Implants

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Total ankle replacement (TAR) has become an effective treatment for end‐stage ankle osteoarthritis. Multiple factors, including patient characteristics, surgical technique, alignment, and bearing surfaces, influence TAR survivorship. Polyethylene (PE) fatigue is a key consideration in improving outcomes.

Number of Doses of Systemic Antibiotic Prophylaxis May Be Reduced in Cemented Primary Knee Arthroplasty Irrespective of Use of Antibiotic in the Cement: A Multiregistry-Based Meta-Analysis

open access: yesJBJS Open Access
Background:. The use of systemic antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) and antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) is the accepted practice to reduce the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in primary total knee arthroplasty (pTKA). However, practice varies

A systematic review of the evidence for single stage and two stage revision of infected knee replacement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic infection about the knee is a devastating complication that may affect between 1% and 5% of knee replacement. With over 79 000 knee replacements being implanted each year in the UK, periprosthetic infection (PJI) is set to ...

Comparison of External Rotation Torque of Short External Rotator Muscles in Hip Flexion Position

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Research, EarlyView.
Preserving the short external rotator muscles of the hip helps prevent dislocation after total hip arthroplasty, but it's unclear which muscles are most critical. This study quantified the external rotation torque in cadaveric hips and found that the obturator externus provides the highest torque during deep hip flexion, where dislocations often occur.
