Performance of Jointless Bridges

Over the years, bridge deck expansion joints have performed poorly, resulting in structural distress and other ill effects. In an attempt to remedy this situation, 28 states have constructed long, multiple‐span highway bridges without expansion joints.

Performance Evaluation of Jointless Bridges

A recent trend in bridge design has been toward the elimination of joints and bearings in the bridge superstructure. Joints and bearings are expensive in both initial and maintenance costs and can get filled with debris, freeze up, and fail in their task to allow expansion and contraction of the superstructure.
