Patterns of spinal motion, kinematic spaces and the land‐to‐sea transition in carnivorans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Using 3D reconstructions, we quantify intervertebral joint mobility to investigate how cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral regions evolved distinct kinematic roles in pinnipeds. The findings reveal lineage‐specific adaptations for swimming and highlight the functional significance of vertebral joint flexibility in ecological transitions.

Guidelines for Maintaining Sustainable Entrepreneurial Centres

open access: yes, 2017
Regional differences determine the way entrepreneurship centres should be organised stimulating socio-economic development. Therefore, a general approach to organising entrepreneurship centres cannot be created. In this chapter, the focus is on providing

Over the edge: Empirical evidence for the cliff‐edge model of obstetric selection

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The cliff‐edge model of obstetric selection maintains that larger neonates and smaller birth canals confer a positive selective advantage until labor becomes obstructed and vaginal delivery is no longer possible, eliciting an abrupt reduction in fitness.

Proof and proving in current classroom materials

open access: yes, 2008
Research across many countries reports that teaching the key ideas of proof and proving to all students is not an easy task. This paper reports on the session of the BSRLM Geometry Working Group which examined current classroom material from the UK with ...

Scoping literature review: Comparing MRI tractography methods for optic radiation analysis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Accurate tractography mapping of the optic radiations is essential to avoiding post‐operative visual field deficits in patients undergoing temporal lobe surgery. This literature review highlights the current landscape of MRI tractography methods that are used to delineate the optic radiations (ORs), with a particular focus on the anterior ...

Diagnostic criteria

open access: yes, 2014
In 1944, Dr Duckett Jones published a set of guidelines for diagnosis of rheumatic fever (RF), which became known as Jones criteria 1. This was based on combinations of clinical and laboratory findings, none of which alone was specific for RF.

Computational fluid dynamics simulations of airflow through the nasal passages of rhinolophoid bats

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The nasal passages of bats that emit their echolocation call through their nostrils have adapted for sound emission as well as standard respiratory and olfactory functions. Rhinolophids, hipposiderids and rhinonycterids all use a high duty cycle (HDC) echolocation strategy.

Developmental differences in cortical bone structure in chimpanzee and human femora reflect early locomotor independence in humans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The cortical bone structure of long bone diaphyses changes throughout growth via skeletal modeling and has important implications for bone strength and structural integrity. Ontogenetic trends in diaphyseal structure have been identified in both chimpanzees and humans but it is not yet clear how these trends compare given notable differences ...
