From Masada to Sarikamis: Trauma and Defeat Turns Into Heroic Resistance and Ontological Security

open access: yesNations and Nationalism, Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 128-137, January 2026.
ABSTRACT This article traces the characteristics of the political discourse in the post‐modern era, which sees the necessity of using traumas and defeat to create national‐religious narratives. Through a critical discourse study of two case studies—the Battle of Masada (73 CE) and the Battle of Sarikamis (1914–1915), this article presents an analytical

On the generalized Josephus problem

open access: yesTsukuba Journal of Mathematics, 2003
The paper deals with the mathematics of dipping rhymes better known as the generalised Josephus problem. The problem is to determine the \(k\)th point to be removed if given a circular ordering of the points \(1,\dots, n\) one starts counting and removes every \(m\)th point.

A Variant on the Feline Josephus Problem

open access: yes, 2018
In the Feline Josephus problem, soldiers stand in a circle, each having $\ell$ `lives'. Going around the circle, a life is taken from every $k$th soldier; soldiers with 0 lives remaining are removed from the circle. Finding the last surviving soldier proves to be an interesting and difficult problem, even in the case when $\ell=1$.
