Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Journal Rankings in Economics: Handle with Care [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2009
Nearly all journal rankings in economics use some weighted average of citations to calculate a journal's impact. These rankings are often used, formally or informally, to help assess the publication success of individual economists or institutions. Although ranking methods and opinions are legion, scant attention has been paid to the usefulness of any ...

Electrospun Core–Shell Bioadhesive Nanofiber Sheets Enable Durable Pulmonary Air Leak Sealing Under Wet and Dynamic Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A core–shell electrospun nanofiber sheet provides strong adhesion and durable sealing on the wet and dynamic lung surface. The engineered fibrous architecture maintains airtight integrity and offers a potential alternative to fibrin sealants for pulmonary air leak management in thoracic surgery.

LEAD: Literature Enhanced Ab Initio Discovery of Nitride Dusting Layers for Enhanced Tunnel Magnetoresistance and Lower Resistance Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) using MgO tunnel barriers face challenges of high resistance‐area product and low tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR). To discover alternative materials, Literature Enhanced Ab initio Discovery (LEAD) is developed. The LEAD‐predicted materials are theoretically evaluated, showing that MTJs with dusting of ScN or TiN on ...
