Status and Prospect of Secondary Battery Technologies in Space Applications: Challenges and the Future

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, Volume 9, Issue 5, May 2026.
Lithium‐ion batteries used in space applications are exposed to extreme conditions, including radiation, vacuum, wide temperature fluctuations, and long storage times, all of which accelerate degradation. This review article summarizes the main degradation mechanisms affecting battery performance in space environments, including capacity fade ...

Intraparticular Heterogeneity Limits Capacity in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries With Carbonate Electrolyte

open access: yesBattery Energy, Volume 5, Issue 3, May 2026.
Cryo‐electron‐microscopy and electrochemical testing reveal that the cathode‐electrolyte interphase in Li–S batteries with carbonate electrolytes forms heterogeneously across carbon particles. This intraparticle heterogeneity limits capacity and rate performance, highlighting the critical role of particle size and cathode‐electrolyte interphase ...

Substitution of Ti by Nb in Maraging Steel: Effects on Strengthening Mechanisms and Crystallographic Behavior

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 5, Page 2672-2692, May 2026.
This work demonstrates that replacing Ti with Nb in maraging steel forms nanoscale Nb–Mo particles along boundaries, strengthening the alloy without relying on Ti phases. Heat‐treatment tuning promotes uniform crystal orientation and balanced grain boundaries, enabling strong yet ductile behavior.

Thermal Segregation and Reddening in Europa's Double Ridges

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Europa's double ridges often display lower albedo and redder color than their surroundings. Their unique topography may cause sublimation‐driven darkening due to illumination and self‐heating—the process of thermal segregation. We apply an advanced 3D thermophysical model, including shadowing and self‐heating through mutual exchange of ...

Modeling the Detectability of Energetic Heliospheric Ions at Pluto During the New Horizons Flyby

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract We investigate the detectability of heliospheric helium ions at energies up to 100 keV by the New Horizons (NH) spacecraft during its flyby through Pluto's induced magnetosphere. The Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation energetic ion detector observed a reduction in their flux by an order of magnitude as the spacecraft ...
