Deep learning and computer vision for image‐based high‐throughput phenotyping of canning quality traits in dry beans

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Canning color retention is a key quality trait in dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) breeding, influencing consumer acceptance and commercial value. Public breeding programs maintain canning quality as a selection trait of importance, but existing color evaluation methods such as visual rating are subjective, while instrument colorimetry is ...

BerryBox: An affordable computer vision system for postharvest phenotyping of cranberry and other small fruits

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Fruit size, shape, color, and percent fruit rot are important quality traits for breeding cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.). Image analysis can be used to measure these traits, but affordable hardware for standardized image capture and integrated user‐friendly software pipelines are lacking.

Best Practices in Open and Reproducible Antarctic Marine Sediment Core Research

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 7, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Marine sediment cores from Antarctica are archived by national programs for reuse and resampling by future researchers, creating a resourceful way to conduct Antarctic science. With reduced budgets to conduct Antarctic field work and to collect new sediment cores offshore of the icy continent, the accessibility of these archived cores and ...

Practical considerations for pathologists when selecting digital pathology systems: an ESDIP guide

open access: yesThe Journal of Pathology, Volume 270, Issue 3, Page 328-341, November 2026.
Abstract The implementation of digital pathology (DP) has been reported across academic, public, and private laboratory settings, providing valuable insights into workflow transformation. However, comparatively little guidance exists on how DP systems should be evaluated prior to acquisition and deployment.

Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Phenotypic Population Structure in Hatchery and Wild Stocks of Ompok pabda From Bangladesh

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Population structure is important for broodstock management and conservation of Ompok pabda. This study evaluated phenotypic shape variation among three hatchery populations from Bogura (Kahalu), Dinajpur (Sadar) and Mymensingh (Muktagacha) and one wild population from Arial Beel, Munshiganj, using 15 landmark geometric morphometrics.

Machine Vision‐Based Morphological Benchmarking and Extrusion Optimization of Analog Rice: A Digital Image Analysis Framework for Agricultural Grain Quality Evaluation

open access: yesApplied Research, Volume 5, Issue 5, October 2026.
A low‐cost Python‐based machine vision framework quantified rice morphology and optimized analog‐rice extrusion. Within the tested range, 50 Hz screw speed and 45 Hz cutter speed produced grains with 96.6% morphological similarity to the commercial Pusa Basmati 1121 reference.
