Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a benign histiocytic skin disorder mainly encountered during infancy. Approximately 10% of cases exhibit ocular manifestations leading to serious complications. Specifically, secondary glaucoma can result in severe and blinding eye disease.

Juvenile Glaucoma Associated with Goniodysgenesis

Clinicopathologic studies, including electron microscopy, of trabeculectomy and peripheral iridectomy specimens from three patients with "juvenile" glaucoma revealed varying forms of maldevlopment of the chamber angle in all cases. A 20-year-old white woman (Case 1) had associated iridogoniodysgenesis with a pseudopolycoria-like iris pattern.

Hereditary Juvenile Glaucoma

A Finnish family is presented in which a mother and six of her eight children and one grandchild have juvenile glaucoma. The inheritance appears to be autosomally dominant with complete penetrance. The symptoms appeared at the age of 11 to 23 years with visual disturbances, coloured rings or headache. The initial IOP ranged between 36 to 81 mm Hg.
