Secularism, Gender and Masculinity in Nineteenth‐Century Cremation in Europe and the USA

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This essay explores, from transnational perspectives, the early history of modern cremation, which developed in the long nineteenth century with secularist connotations. I argue that the beginnings of modern cremation were shaped by bourgeois men who claimed certain identifiers for themselves in a gendering and Othering way.

Analysis of the use of computational intelligence techniques for air-conditioning systems: A systematic mapping study

open access: yesMeasurement + Control, 2019
In our systematic mapping study, we examined 289 published works to determine which intelligent computing methods (e.g. Artificial Neural Networks, Machine Learning, and Fuzzy Logic) used by air-conditioning systems can provide energy savings and improve

Synthetic biology approaches to generate temperature‐sensitive alleles for the Sterile Insect Technique

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Abstract The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an environmentally friendly, sustainable pest control approach, which uses large‐scale releases of sterile insects to suppress or eradicate target populations through infertile matings. The efficiency of SIT is enhanced by male‐only releases requiring genetic sexing strains (GSSs) that are classically ...

Correlation-Driven d-Band Modifications Promote Chemical Bonding at 3d-Ferromagnetic Surfaces. [PDF]

open access: yesSmall
Electron correlation at the oxygen‐passivated Fe(100) surface renormalizes and narrows the Fe d‐bands, enhancing their energetic overlap with the frontier orbitals of adsorbed pentacene. This strengthens hybridization and converts a weakly bound interface into a chemisorbed hybrid system, illustrating how correlation‐tuned d‐bands can be used to ...

Validation of the prognosis model SIMAGRIO‐W to predict larval activity in top soil layers for Agriotes larvae in eastern Austria Validierung des Prognosemodells SIMAGRIO‐W zur Vorhersage der Aktivität von Agriotes‐Larven in den obersten Bodenschichten in Ostösterreich

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Wireworms migrate within the soil column depending on the temperature and moisture content of the soil. SIMAGRIO‐W model accuracy comparison between Germany and Austria. Different temperature preferences highlight the need for species‐specific modelling.

Anticipating data sharing for student‐centred education: Governmental policy initiatives in Switzerland and Japan

open access: yesBritish Journal of Educational Technology, EarlyView.
In the context of digital transformation and platformisation of education, policy concerns are shifting from infrastructure to data use. New governmental initiatives attempt to facilitate data sharing between schools, research and governing authorities to improve student learning. These attempts to create public data spaces anticipate new topologies of

Out in the cold? A review of Early Middle Palaeolithic settlements in northern Central Europe, age data and geological preconditions for site formation and preservation

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Chironomid‐based summer temperature reconstruction of the Eemian–Weichselian transition at Lichtenberg, northern Germany

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Understanding the temperature variability of past interglacial cycles is essential to predict future climates. We present a new summer temperature reconstruction, based on the subfossil chironomid record from a small palaeolake adjacent to the Middle Palaeolithic site of Lichtenberg, northern Germany. The record spans from the Saalian late glacial over
