K+‐Cl cotransport: ‘to be or not to be’ oxygen sensitive

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 1998
Under 20 years ago, K+-Cl− cotransport (Cot) was discovered in red blood cells after hyposmotic cell swelling (Dunham & Ellory, 1981) and cellular thiol modification (Lauf & Theg, 1980), and later shown to be electroneutral (Kaji, 1993; Lauf & Adragna, 1996).

Na/K/Cl cotransport in cultured human fibroblasts.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1985
The transport characteristics and regulation of the Na/K/Cl cotransport system were investigated in cultured human fibroblasts (HSWP cells). The existence of the system was documented by the finding that digitoxin-insensitive K+ influx was dependent upon the presence of both Na+ and Cl- in the extracellular milieu.

Ibuprofen inhibits human sweet taste and glucose detection implicating an additional mechanism of metabolic disease risk reduction

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose The human sweet taste receptor, TAS1R2–TAS1R3, conveys sweet taste in the mouth and may help regulate glucose metabolism throughout the body. Ibuprofen and naproxen are structurally similar to known inhibitors of TAS1R2–TAS1R3 and have been associated with metabolic benefits.

Electron Photodetachment from Aqueous Anions. I. Quantum Yields for Generation of Hydrated Electron by 193 and 248 nm Laser Photoexcitation of Miscellaneous Inorganic Anions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Time resolved transient absorption spectroscopy has been used to determine quantum yields for electron photodetachment in 193 nm and (where possible) 248 nm laser excitation of miscellaneous aqueous anions, including hexacyanoferrate(II), sulfate, sulfite, halide anions (Cl-, Br-, and I-), pseudohalide anions (OH-, HS-, CNS-), and several common ...

Activation of the erythroid K-Cl cotransporter Kcc1 enhances sickle cell disease pathology in a humanized mouse model.

open access: yesBlood, 2015
We used an N-ethyl-N-nitrosurea-based forward genetic screen in mice to identify new genes and alleles that regulate erythropoiesis. Here, we describe a mouse line expressing an activated form of the K-Cl cotransporter Slc12a4 (Kcc1), which results in a ...

The cardio‐renal‐metabolic role of the nod‐like receptor protein‐3 and senescence‐associated secretory phenotype in early sodium/glucose cotransporter‐2 inhibitor therapy in people with diabetes who have had a myocardial infarction

open access: yesDiabetic Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Following an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have a 2‐to‐3 fold increased risk of mortality compared to those without diabetes, and globally cardiorenal complications account for 50% of diabetes‐related deaths.

The Importance of Connexin 43 in Enamel Development and Mineralization

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
During enamel development, formation of hydroxyapatite crystals and regulation of pH in the enamel matrix require massive transport of ions. Both ameloblasts and adjacent dental epithelial cells in the stellate reticulum co-express several transmembrane ...

Mortality risk following ischaemic and non‐ischaemic heart failure in people with type 2 diabetes: Observational study in England, 2000–2021

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims To investigate the association between type 2 diabetes and all‐cause mortality in people with ischaemic and non‐ischaemic heart failure (HF). Methods Using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink primary care data, linked to hospital and mortality records, we identified newly diagnosed adults with type 2 diabetes between 2000 and 2021 and

Evaporation of buffer gas-thermalized anions out of a multipole rf ion trap [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We identify plain evaporation of ions as the fundamental loss mechanism out of a multipole ion trap. Using thermalized negative Cl- ions we find that the evaporative loss rate is proportional to a Boltzmann factor. This thermodynamic description sheds new light on the dynamics of particles in time-varying confining potentials. It specifically allows us
