Utveckling av temperaturreguleringskapacitet hos renkalvar [PDF]

open access: yesRangifer, 1984
Utveckling av temperaturregleringskapacitet hos nyfodda renkalvar undersöktes vid Paliskuntain Yhdistys (Foreningen for Renbeteslagen) försoksstation i Kaamanen under maj-juli 1981-82.

Modelling reindeer rut activity using on‐animal acoustic recorders and machine learning

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
For decades, researchers have employed sound to study the biology of wildlife, with the aim to better understand their ecology and behaviour. By utilizing on‐animal recorders to capture audio from freely moving animals, scientists can decipher the ...

The ongoing lateral expansion of peatlands in Finland

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 29, Issue 24, Page 7173-7191, December 2023., 2023
Margins of the peatlands in Finland have continued to expand to the present day. This expansion has accelerated since 1500 Before Present. Abstract Peatlands are the most dense terrestrial carbon stock and since the last glacial epoch northern peatlands have accumulated between 400 and 1000 Gt of carbon.

Consistent centennial‐scale change in European sub‐Arctic peatland vegetation toward Sphagnum dominance—Implications for carbon sink capacity

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 29, Issue 6, Page 1530-1544, March 2023., 2023
We studied how European sub‐Arctic peatland (including permafrost and non‐permafrost peatlands) intermediate and dry microhabitats have changed in response to changes in climate during the past two millennia. We payed special attention to the recent past.

Winter condition variability decreases the economic sustainability of reindeer husbandry

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Wild and semidomesticated reindeer are one of the key species in Arctic and subarctic areas, and their population dynamics are closely tied to winter conditions. Difficult snow conditions have been found to decrease the calving success and survivability of reindeer, but the economic effects of variation in winter conditions on reindeer ...

Peatland Heterogeneity Impacts on Regional Carbon Flux and Its Radiative Effect Within a Boreal Landscape

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 127, Issue 9, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Peatlands, with high spatial variability in ecotypes and microforms, constitute a significant part of the boreal landscape and play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle. However, the effects of this peatland heterogeneity within the boreal landscape are rarely quantified.

Military supply, everyday demand, and reindeer: Zooarchaeology of Nazi German Second World War military presence in Finnish Lapland, Northernmost Europe

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 3-17, January/February 2022., 2022
Abstract During the Second World War, in 1941–1944, Nazi German troops held the frontal responsibility of the Arctic front in Finnish Lapland. In this paper, we present the first zooarchaeological study of the wartime faunal remains from German military camps in Lapland.

Methane production and oxidation potentials along a fen‐bog gradient from southern boreal to subarctic peatlands in Finland

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 27, Issue 18, Page 4449-4464, September 2021., 2021
We investigated potential CH4 production and oxidation rates at three temperature levels for 14 peatlands in Finland, representing bogs, poor fens and rich fens, and linked the potential patterns to their methanogen and methanotroph abundance, peat properties, and plant functional types.

Genistein: An Integrative Overview of Its Mode of Action, Pharmacological Properties, and Health Benefits

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Genistein is an isoflavone first isolated from the brooming plant Dyer’s Genista tinctoria L. and is widely distributed in the Fabaceae family. As an isoflavone, mammalian genistein exerts estrogen‐like functions. Several biological effects of genistein have been reported in preclinical studies, such as the antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial,
