Post‐Soviet fire and grazing regimes govern the abundance of a key ecosystem engineer on the Eurasian steppe, the yellow ground squirrel Spermophilus fulvus

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 29, Issue 3, Page 395-408, March 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim Grazing intensity and fire patterns across the Eurasian steppes have changed dramatically over the past decades due to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and Kazakhstan is now a global fire hotspot. The implications of these changes for ecosystem functioning are largely unclear.

Measurements and Approximations for Submicron‐Aerosol Size Distribution Functions

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 8, Issue 6, June 2021., 2021
Abstract Results of field measurements taken in the near‐Caspian (2002, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016 years) and near‐Aral sea (1998) deserts under the conditions of weak winds (almost in the absence of saltation processes) and strong heating of the land surface are given. These results show that the fine mineral dust aerosol (0.1–1 m)

Post‐Soviet shifts in grazing and fire regimes changed the functional plant community composition on the Eurasian steppe

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 388-401, January 2021., 2021
Post‐Soviet declines in livestock grazing on the Kazakh steppe corresponded to increases in grassland fires across large areas, causing the disturbance regime to shift from grazer to fire control. We show that grazing and fire each result in different plant functional compositions, which suggests widespread increases in grass cover and associated ...

Population and distribution of beavers Castor fiber and Castor canadensis in Eurasia

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 51, Issue 1, Page 1-24, January 2021., 2021
A century ago, overhunting had reduced Eurasian beaver Castor fiber populations to c. 1200 animals in scattered refugia from France to Mongolia. Reintroductions and natural spread have since restored beavers to wide areas of their original range. The population has more than tripled since the first modern estimate in 1998, to c. 1.5 million.
