Drywood Termite, Cryptotermes cavifrons Banks (Insecta: Isoptera: Kalotermitidae)

open access: yesEDIS, 2004
Termites of the genus Cryptotermes were sometimes called powderpost termites because of the telltale heaps of fecal pellets (frass) that accumulate beneath infested wood.

NEW DISTRIBUTION RECORD OF Cryptotermes brevis (ISOPTERA, KALOTERMITIDAE) IN ARGENTINA

open access: yesActa Biológica Colombiana, 2014
The first record of the West Indian drywood termite Cryptotermes brevis  (Walker, 1853) in the city of Corrientes (Argentina) is reported. Several C. brevis  colonies were detected inside a local deposit, from wooden crates used for carrying fresh fruits.

Three new species of Rugitermes (Isoptera, Kalotermitidae) from Peru and Bolivia. [PDF]

open access: yesZookeys, 2020
The soldier of Rugitermes aridussp. nov. is described from a xeric, termite-depauperate region of central Peru. Rugitermes rufussp. nov. and R. volcanensissp. nov. are described from soldiers and dealated imagos collected in a mesic forest of Amboró National Park in western Bolivia. The imago of R. rufus is unique among all described Rugitermes species

Comparative analysis of adipokinetic hormones and their receptors in Blattodea reveals novel patterns of gene evolution

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 615-633, December 2023., 2023
Comprehensive analysis of adipokinetic hormone gene evolution in Blattodea. Discovery of a novel group of decapeptides that are unique to Blaberoidea. Adipokinetic hormone receptor genes broadly reflect accepted blattodean relationships. Abstract Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a neuropeptide produced in the insect corpora cardiaca that plays an ...

First outdoor records in the Old World of the invasive drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis (Walker, 1853) (Kalotermitidae)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 147, Issue 9, Page 875-877, November 2023., 2023
Abstract Cryptotermes brevis (Walker, 1853) (Kalotermitidae), commonly called the West Indian drywood termite, is an important structural pest in many parts of the world. Almost all records of C. brevis come from timber or furniture inside human structures.

New Parabasalia symbionts Snyderella spp. and Daimonympha gen. nov. from South American Rugitermes termites and the parallel evolution of a cell with a rotating “head”

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 70, Issue 5, September/October 2023., 2023
Abstract Most Parabasalia are symbionts in the hindgut of “lower” (non‐Termitidae) termites, where they widely vary in morphology and degree of morphological complexity. Large and complex cells in the class Cristamonadea evolved by replicating a fundamental unit, the karyomastigont, in various ways.

Neoisoptera repeatedly colonised Madagascar after the Middle Miocene climatic optimum

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2023, Issue 7, July 2023., 2023
Madagascar is home to many endemic plant and animal species owing to its ancient isolation from other landmasses. This unique fauna includes several lineages of termites, a group of insects known for their key role in organic matter decomposition in many terrestrial ecosystems. How and when termites colonised Madagascar remains unknown.

Effect of food restriction on survival and reproduction of a termite

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 36, Issue 3, Page 542-549, March 2023., 2023
Effect of food restriction on individual and colony life histories. Abstract Food availability affects the trade‐off between maintenance and reproduction in a wide range of organisms, but its effects on social insects remain poorly understood. In social insects, the maintenance‐reproduction trade‐off seems to be absent in individuals but may appear at ...
