Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to deliver a risk assessment on the likelihood of pest freedom from regulated EU quarantine pests, with emphasis on Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and its vectors Monochamus spp. of debarked conifer wood chips fumigated with sulfuryl fluoride as proposed by the United States (US) and

Abstract Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Blattodea: Kalotermitidae) is one of the most destructive drywood termites that attack moisture‐protected timber in service. Heat treatment has been studied to control these termites, but the low thermal conductivity of wood can result in prolonged treatment times and the need for high temperatures to eliminate ...

Seasonal and Daily Patterns in Activity of the Western Drywood Termite, Incisitermes minor (Hagen)
Activity of colonies of the western drywood termite, Incisitermes minor, was measured with acoustic emission (AE) technology in five loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) logs. Termite activity, whether it was feeding, excavation or movement, was monitored for 11

Evolution of obligate asexuality in termites with mixed‐sex societies
The evolution of obligate asexuality is thought to be prevented in animals whose males play crucial roles beyond the contribution of gametes. While obligate asexuality had not until recently been observed in termites whose colonies commonly comprise both male and female reproductives, workers, and soldiers, all‐female asexual populations of the termite

We assessed the long‐standing hypothesis that chemical profile complexity increases with levels of sociality in the insect order Blattodea investigating solitary as well as eusocial species. Strikingly, we could not confirm any consistent correlative patterns between chemical, transcriptomic, and social complexity.

Conserved orthology in termite chemosensory gene families
Termites are eusocial insects known to use a variety of pheromones in tasks necessary for maintenance of their societies. As such, olfaction and pheromone communication in termites has been an object of intense study; trail-following pheromones (TFPs ...

Updated classification of the phylum Parabasalia
Abstract The phylum Parabasalia includes very diverse single‐cell organisms that nevertheless share a distinctive set of morphological traits. Most are harmless or beneficial gut symbionts of animals, but some have turned into parasites in other body compartments, the most notorious example being Trichomonas vaginalis in humans.

Global contribution of invertebrates to forest litter decomposition
Invertebrates play important roles in litter decomposition, but the regional pattern of their effects is poorly understood. We found that invertebrate contributions to litter decomposition are 1.4 times higher in tropical and subtropical forests than forests elsewhere, with an overall contribution of 31% to global forest litter decomposition.
