Molecular biology of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus

Frontiers in Bioscience, 2002
Over the past twenty odd years, kaposi's sarcoma has launched from being a rare pathological curiosity to a significant public health concern. This massive increase in incidence, concurrent with the aids epidemic, has sparked a tremendous amount of interest in uncovering the etiopathogenesis of this disease.

Molecular piracy of Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus

Cytokine & Growth Factor Reviews, 2001
Kaposi's Sarcoma associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) is the most recently discovered human tumor virus and is associated with the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and Multicentric Casttleman's disease. KSHV contains numerous open reading frames with striking homology to cellular genes.

The molecular pathology of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Reviews on Cancer, 2002
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the eighth and most recently identified human herpesvirus (HHV-8). KSHV was discovered in 1994 by Chang et al. who used representational difference analysis to search for DNA sequences present in AIDS-associated KS but not in adjacent normal skin [1].

Seroepidemiology of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)

Seminars in Cancer Biology, 1999
Since the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV also referred to as HHV-8, human herpesvirus-8) was discovered it has been shown that the virus is associated with all cases of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) classical, endemic, or AIDS associated. In the numerous countries where the seroprevalence of this virus has been studied, data demonstrate that the

The role of Kaposi sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus in the pathogenesis of Kaposi sarcoma

The Journal of Pathology, 2014
AbstractKaposi sarcoma (KS) is an unusual vascular tumour caused by an oncogenic‐herpesvirus, Kaposi sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV 8). KS lesions are characterized by an abundant inflammatory infiltrate, the presence of KSHV‐infected endothelial cells that show signs of aberrant differentiation, as well ...

Kaposi Sarcoma‐Associated Herpesvirus and Kidney Disease

Journal of Medical Virology
ABSTRACTKaposi sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus 8, is a carcinogenic gamma herpesvirus strongly associated with various human malignancies, including Kaposi sarcoma. Compromised immune function is a critical risk factor for the development of Kaposi sarcoma, particularly in individuals with human immunodeficiency ...

Immune evasion by Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus

Nature Reviews Immunology, 2007
To efficiently establish a persistent infection, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV; also known as HHV8) dedicates a large amount of its coding potential to produce proteins that antagonize the immune system of its host. These viral immunomodulators interfere with both the innate and adaptive immune responses and most of them are homologous ...

The Emergence of Kaposi's Sarcoma–Associated Herpesvirus (Human Herpesvirus 8)

New England Journal of Medicine, 2000
The concept of emerging “new” pathogens is somewhat misnamed, since these pathogens are usually old infections that have newly adapted to social and technological changes. Such is the case for Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus, also referred to as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), which was first described in 1994 and is the subject of two articles ...

Propagating Kaposi's Sarcoma–Associated Herpesvirus

New England Journal of Medicine, 1997
Over the past two years, there has been great interest in a newly recognized herpesvirus, called both Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and human herpesvirus 8.
