ABSTRACT Swelling of clay‐sulfate rocks is a concern in geotechnical engineering that can damage infrastructure. In the historic town of Staufen in southwest Germany, geothermal drilling into a swellable anhydrite‐bearing clay formation resulted in water inflow and subsequent swelling, triggering ground heave and damage to more than 250 houses.

In order to reveal the adaptation strategies of karst forest plants to “high-calcium (Ca)–low-phosphorus (P) heterogeneous” habitats, the dominant shrubs and herbs in the Maolan karst area were taken as the research objects. The carbon (C), nitrogen (N),

Many key ecosystem functions are affected by plant roots and their traits. However, understanding of the patterns in, and drivers of, root traits lags far behind equivalent knowledge of above‐ground tissues, particularly in boreal old growth forests. We surveyed community‐level root traits across 11 old growth forests spanning a wide latitudinal range ...

GYPSUM KARST IN THE OLVERA AREA (CADIZ PROVINCE, ANDALUSIA, SPAIN)
In the Olvera area (Cádiz Province, Andalusia, Spain) different karstic lithologies (preferentially carbonates and gypsum) are recognizable, relating to rainfall values of the zone and producing a karst complex of a certain interest.

Evergreen broadleaved forests (EBLFs) represent an iconic vegetation type in subtropical montane East Asia, but they are experiencing intensifying anthropogenic pressure and increasing habitat fragmentation. Here, using a dominant and widespread tree species characteristic of East Asian EBLFs, we examine its phylogeographic history and evaluate what it

Chromosome-level genome assembly of the medicinal plant Ophiorrhiza japonica Blume
Ophiorrhiza japonica, a medicinal plant of Rubiaceae, has been selected as a model plant for the study of MIA biosynthesis and regulation, as well as a sustainable source of camptothecin. Here, we performed an assembly and annotation of O.

Needle in a haystack: Holocene history of European larch in Central Europe revisited
Defining nativity of species is crucial for their management. However, this is a complex task, especially for species that have been used and spread by humans for a long time. We combined paleoecological records with extensive genetic data to investigate the Holocene history of European larch—a common and economically important tree species in Central ...

Bacillus spp. as potential probiotics: promoting piglet growth by improving intestinal health
The application of Bacillus spp. as probiotics in the swine industry, particularly for piglet production, has garnered significant attention in recent years. This review aimed to summarized the role and mechanisms of Bacillus spp. in promoting growth and

We evaluated single‐ and multi‐sensor UAV approaches for classifying tree species and standing dead trees in boreal forests, focusing on key biodiversity indicators such as European aspen. Using spectral and structural features extracted from RGB, multispectral (MSP), and LiDAR point clouds for 1,205 field‐measured trees, we compared classification ...
