Kathakali is a dance drama genre from Kerala, India. A form of vocal narration, the sopanam, is the base of the plays. It has not been studied so far in the field of ethnomusicology. The objective of this article is the question of meanings arousing from the interrelation of vocal music, instrumental accompaniment and drama.
