Keel bone differences in laying hens housed in enriched colony cages

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2019
Keel bone damage may be painful to birds and affect their production. In order to better understand the frequency, position, and timepoint of keel bone damage that occur during production, the integrity of W-36 laying hen keel bones housed in enriched colony cages at 748.4 cm2 (116 in2) was evaluated.

Macrophage TRIM21 Inhibition Ameliorates Murine Acute Pancreatitis via PHB2‐Mediated Mitochondrial Stabilization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Macrophage‐derived TRIM21 drives the progression of AP via ubiquitin‐proteasome‐mediated degradation of PHB2, leading to impaired PHB2‐mediated mitophagy. Therefore, accumulation of cytosolic mtDNA hyperactivates the cGAS‐STING signaling axis, thereby amplifying inflammatory cascades.

Health and Welfare in Dutch Organic Laying Hens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
From 2007–2008, data on animal health and welfare and farm management during rearing and laying periods were collected from 49 flocks of organic laying hens in the Netherlands. Our aim was to investigate how organic egg farms performed in terms of animal

Copper Contact for Perovskite Solar Cells: Properties, Interfaces, and Scalable Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, EarlyView.
Copper electrodes, as low‐cost, scalable contacts for perovskite solar cells, offer several advantages over precious metals such as Au and Ag, including performance, cost, deposition methods, and interfacial engineering. Copper (Cu) electrodes are increasingly considered practical, sustainable alternatives to noble‐metal contacts in perovskite solar ...

n-3 essential fatty acid and vitamin D supplementation improve skeletal health in laying hens

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2023
: Keel bone fractures and osteoporosis are prevalent and damaging skeletal issues in the laying hen industry. There is a large interest in improving bone quality parameters to reduce or eliminate these conditions, thus improving bird welfare.

Euthanasia Through Cervical Dislocation or CO2 Might Affect Keel Bone Fracture Prevalence in 30-Week-Old Laying Hens

open access: yesFrontiers in Animal Science, 2021
Laying hens are susceptible to keel bone fractures due to continuous endogenous calcium resorption for eggshell formation. Although it is assumed that external trauma to the keel bone, e.g., due to collisions, is the main cause for fractures, accumulated

An overview of the postcranial osteology of caecilians (Gymnophiona, Lissamphibia)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Caecilians comprise a relatively small (~220 species) group (Gymnophiona) of snake‐like or worm‐like, mostly tropical amphibians. Most adult caecilians are fossorial, although some species may live in aquatic or semi‐aquatic environments, either as larvae or adults.

Providing ramps in rearing aviaries affects laying pullet distribution, behavior and bone properties

open access: yesJournal of Applied Poultry Research, 2022
SUMMARY: To ensure that laying hens can make full use of the various resources within an aviary barn and develop optimum bone health while minimizing keel bone fractures, appropriate cognitive and bone development during rearing is critical.
