Knowledge and Argument

open access: yesNoûs, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT I argue that knowledge plays a distinctive role in psychological explanation that weaker epistemic states cannot because it is robust in the face of counterevidence in a way that they are not. Being robust in the face of counterevidence makes your belief robust in the face of counterargument.

The Epistemology and Semantics of Ignorance

open access: yesPhilosophy and Phenomenological Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper is concerned with ignorance. It develops a novel, full account of the nature and epistemic normativity of objectual and factual ignorance, degrees of ignorance, comparative ignorance, and the semantics of permissible outright attributions of ignorance of facts and phenomena.

Processes reinforcing regime shift to turf-forming algae in a kelp bed ecosystem

open access: yes, 2018
Canopy-forming brown algae (kelps and fucoids) that provide habitat structure on temperate rocky reefs increasingly are replaced by assemblages of low-lying and pervasive turf algae, driving concerns that these shifts represent a stable degraded reef ...

Cultural and ecological baselines inform an eco‐cultural vision for Weka (Gallirallus australis) restoration in southern New Zealand

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Eco‐cultural restoration requires targets that reflect cultural values and ecological conditions. We present an integrative approach combining cultural and ecological baselines to inform future eco‐cultural restoration of Buff weka (Gallirallus australis hectori), a flightless bird of deep cultural significance to the Ōtākou Māori

Kelp help - revitalizing the sugar kelp community

open access: yes, 2008

Kelp‐boulder transplants for habitat restoration

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Degraded habitats present a major barrier to the survival and recovery of threatened marine species, particularly where structural or biogenic complexity has been lost, and natural regeneration ability is uncertain. Despite growing interest in habitat restoration, techniques rarely deliver rapid improvements at the necessary ...

Limitations of using the canopy to infer the structure and functioning of giant kelp forests

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Data obtained from remote sensing of floating kelp canopies are routinely used to assess changes in the distribution, structure and functioning of kelp forests.

Not all rhodoliths need a bed–depositional mechanisms in shallow water Sporolithon nodosum rhodoliths from the Whangaparaoa peninsula (North Island, New Zealand)

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rhodoliths, formed by crustose coralline algae (CCA), are prominent components in carbonate platform deposits, contributing to the characteristic rhodalgal facies. Their formation is influenced by both biological and physical factors, and under specific conditions, they can accumulate, forming extensive rhodolith beds.

Tracing species-specific kelp eDNA in marine sediments for blue carbon assessment along the Norwegian Coast

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Terrestrial primary production is acknowledged as a major contributor to atmospheric carbon transformation and storage. In contrast, marine primary production, especially the contribution from kelp forests, remains less studied and accounted for.

Embodied ethnographies: Entanglements in the Anthropocene

open access: yesThe Australian Journal of Anthropology, EarlyView.
Abstract ‘Entanglements in the Anthropocene’ is an embodied exploration of the intersections of place, dance and lens‐based practices (photography and video). Lens‐based works discussed here result from collaborative research projects and grow from a shared curiosity about aesthetics in the Anthropocene and how to express entangled relationships with ...
