Machine Learning to Predict Extranodal Extension in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 136, Issue 3, Page 1099-1108, March 2026.
Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) demonstrated significantly higher diagnostic performance than radiologists in detecting extranodal extension (ENE) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using CT scans. This meta‐analysis of six studies found that MLAs had a pooled AUC of 0.91, whereas radiologists achieved only 0.65.

Retinal Capillary Density Reduction Contributes to Dysthyroid Optic Neuropathy via an L‐Arginine‐NO Pathway: A Metabonomics and Clinical Trial Study

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2026.
Oxidative stress induces endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) uncoupling and L‐arginine depletion, reducing nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability in vascular endothelium and contributing to decreased retinal capillary density (RCD) in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON).

Rainfall Variability and Extremes in the Hamassa Sub‐Basin, Ethiopia: Past Trends and Future Risks

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 33, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
This study assessed spatial variability and temporal trends in the historical (1986–2023) and projected precipitation regime of the Hamassa sub‐basin. The results indicate a significant drying trend during the main cropping season, marked interannual and spatial variability, and associated linkages to warm‐phase ENSO events, which delay the onset and ...

Distilling food web dynamics: top–down and bottom–up drivers of extinction and trophic cascades

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 3, March 2026.
Quantifying population dynamics is a fundamental challenge in ecology and evolutionary biology, particularly for species that are cryptic, microscopic, or extinct. Traditional approaches rely on continuous representations of population size, but in many cases, the precise number of individuals is unknowable.

An Association Test for Ordinal Outcomes in Clustered Data With Informative Cluster Size

open access: yesPharmaceutical Statistics, Volume 25, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
ABSTRACT In cluster‐correlated data, the number of observations in a cluster can be associated with the outcome from that cluster. This phenomenon is known as informative cluster size which can occur in cluster‐randomized clinical trial data. Several studies have found that ignoring the issue of informative cluster size can produce biased results in ...
