Herpes Simplex Virus Keratitis – Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges

open access: yesOkulistyka
Herpes simplex virus keratitis is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. The observed inflammatory changes may result from a primary ocular infection or, more commonly, from recurrent reactivation of the virus, which remains latent in the ...

Primary Herpes Simplex Subepithelial Dendritic Keratitis

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Ophthalmology, 1981
A 37-year-old man developed an acute follicular conjunctivitis with preauricular lymphadenopathy believed to be epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. On the eighth day of his disease, subepithelial dendritic opacities developed in the cornea which were not typical of either epidemic keratoconjunctivitis or herpetic keratitis.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Feline Ulcerative Keratitis and Corneal Sequestra in a Referral Population and Comparison Between Brachycephalic and Nonbrachycephalic Cats

open access: yesVeterinary Ophthalmology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of feline ulcerative keratitis (UK) and corneal sequestra (CS) in brachycephalic and nonbrachycephalic breeds. Animals Studied Brachycephalic and nonbrachycephalic cats. Procedures Cats diagnosed with UK or CS (Total, 392; UK, 290; CS, 102), between 2013 and 2022, were included ...

PKHB1 peptide induces antiviral effects through induction of immunogenic cell death in herpes simplex keratitis

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2022
Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a severe, infectious corneal disease caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. The increasing prevalence of acyclovir resistance, the side effects of hormonal drugs, and the ease of recurrence after ...

Immune- and nonimmune-compartment-specific interferon responses are critical determinants of herpes simplex virus-induced generalized infections and acute liver failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The interferon (IFN) response to viral pathogens is critical for host survival. In humans and mouse models, defects in IFN responses can result in lethal herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infections, usually from encephalitis.

Personalized Models of Biological Barriers and Their Diseases: Recent Progress with Organs‐On‐Chips

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, Volume 10, Issue 2, February 2026.
Buck and Bugter et al. explore the architectural diversity and physiological functions of human barrier systems and reveal how organ‐on‐chip platforms, particularly those integrating patient‐derived cells, are advancing barrier disease modeling. They highlight how emerging biological and technological advances can be used to bridge the gap between ...
