Mismatch of corneal specialists’ expectations and keratoconus knowledge in general ophthalmologists - a prospective observational study in Switzerland

open access: yesBMC Medical Education, 2021
Background To assess whether Swiss general ophthalmologists have the minimal keratoconus knowledge that corneal specialists would expect them to have. Methods Corneal specialists defined “minimal keratoconus knowledge” (MKK) with respect to definition ...

Screening of Keratoconus Using Autokeratometer and Keratometer Keratoconus Index

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2021
The keratometer keratoconus index (KKI) is a diagnostic index for the risk of keratoconus calculated from autokeratometer test values. We partially modified the KKI equation and assessed it without limiting the target age and severity of keratoconus ...

An adaptive algorithm for the cornea modeling from keratometric data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper we describe an adaptive and multi-scale algorithm for the parsimonious fit of the corneal surface data that allows to adapt the number of functions used in the reconstruction to the conditions of each cornea. The method implements also a dynamical selection of the parameters and the management of noise.

The Interconnected World of Dermatology and Ophthalmology

open access: yesJEADV Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Medicine is a dynamic field that constantly discovers new links between different specialties. Dermatology and Ophthalmology are two related branches of medicine, having many similarities and interactions. The skin and the eyes both encounter various environmental challenges, such as ultraviolet radiation, allergens, infections, and trauma ...

Systemic Associations with Keratoconus

open access: yesLife, 2023
Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea that results in progressive steepening and thinning of the cornea and subsequent vision loss. It nearly always presents as a bilateral disease, suggesting that there is an underlying abnormality of the corneas that ...

Corneal Cell Matrix‐Conditioned Amniotic Membrane with Improved Biochemical Properties and Corneal Wound Healing Potential: An In Vitro and In Vivo Study

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, EarlyView.
In this research, the amniotic membrane is sought to be enhanced biologically by treating it with primary cultured corneal cells. The findings indicate that amniotic membranes conditioned with limbal stem cells serve as an effective wound dressing that mimics corneal tissue, offering better cell adhesion, and healing properties, paving the way for ...

Characteristics of pediatric keratoconus and the role of corneal topography in early diagnosis: A prospective study

open access: yesTNOA Journal of Ophthalmic Science and Research, 2022
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical and topographical features of keratoconus in children and to emphasize the role of corneal topography in early diagnosis of keratoconus in eyes with astigmatism. Materials and Methods: It was

Effects of customized corneal cross‐linking on higher‐order aberrations in progressive keratoconus and low‐grade myopia

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To evaluate the effects of customized corneal collagen cross‐linking (CXL) on higher‐order aberrations (HOAs) in keratoconus (KC): vertical coma (VC), horizontal coma (HC), spherical aberration (SA), trefoil (TF) and astigmatism, compared with the same effects in healthy eyes undergoing CXL for low‐grade myopia.

Skin Biophysical Characteristics in Patients with Keratoconus: A Controlled Study

open access: yesScientifica, 2016
Background. Keratoconus is a relatively common corneal disease causing significant visual disability. Individuals with connective tissue disorders that affect the skin such as Marfan’s syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or patients with atopic ...
