Kernels in planar digraphs

open access: yesJournal of Computer and System Sciences, 2005
AbstractA set S of vertices in a digraph D=(V,A) is a kernel if S is independent and every vertex in V-S has an out-neighbor in S. We show that there exist O(n219.1k+n4)-time and O(k36+219.1kk9+n2)-time algorithms for checking whether a planar digraph D of order n has a kernel with at most k vertices.

Unlock the Walnut: How a Pectin‐Rich Suture Tissue and Moisture‐Driven Crack Formation Induce Shell Splitting and Facilitate Seed Germination

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Walnut seeds are enclosed in a remarkably strong shell made of sclerenchyma, separated by a pectin‐rich suture tissue. Different cell shapes and chemical composition of this tissue point to an opening mechanism, which is triggered by cyclic humidity changes.

Nitrogen‐Vacancy Magnetometry of Edge Magnetism in WS2 Flakes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Using nitrogen‐vacancy magnetometry, the authors visualize room‐temperature stray magnetic fields localized at the edges of WS2 flakes. Their measurements reveal edge‐specific magnetization consistent with spin canting in antiferromagnetically coupled edge states.

Gaussian‐Sigmoid Reinforcement Transistors: Resolving Exploration‐Exploitation Trade‐Off Through Gate Voltage‐Controlled Activation Functions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The characteristics of a vertical n–p–i–p heterostructure transistor device, which exhibits a voltage‐tunable transition between Gaussian and sigmoid functions, are investigated. The mixed state of the transfer curve enables the utilization of both exploitation and exploration, improving computational performance in reinforcement learning tasks ...

On the uniqueness of kernels

open access: yesJournal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 1992
AbstractLet S be a compact orientable surface. For any graph G embedded on S and any closed curve D on S we define μG(D) as the minimum number of intersections of G and D′, where D′ ranges over all closed curves freely homotopic to D. We call G a kernel if μG′ ≠ μG for each proper minor G′ of G.

Engineering Highly Cellularized Living Materials via Mechanical Agitation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A mechanical agitation strategy is developed to engineer highly cellularized living materials, achieving cell densities of up to 1 billion cells per milliliter. By precisely tuning properties such as stiffness and toughness in blood clots, the approach is validated in both in vitro and in vivo studies.
