The presence of yellow staining and damage to the brain caused by unconjugated bilirubin was first described by Hervieux in 1847.Kernicterus, the technical term used to describe the intense yellow staining in the basal ganglia of the brain, was first used by Schmorl in 1903. Perhaps as many as 60 percent of all babies born each year in the U.S.

In one early paper (Zuelzer, W., and Mudgett, R. 1950) two groups of a total of 55 kernicteric newborn infants were compared as regards etiology, laboratory data, and neuropathology. One group of patients consisted of 23 cases, all kernicteric and associated with erythroblastosis fetalis, and a second group of 32 cases, not associated with ...

We report six cases of kernicterus examined by MRI. All showed symmetrical high-signal lesions in the globus pallidus bilaterally on long TR images. Two showed high-signal lesions in the subthalamic nuclei and in the corticospinal tracts of the midbrain. Three revealed dilatation of both lateral ventricles, reflecting atrophy of the hippocampus.

Kernicterus: an international perspective
Seminars in Neonatology, 2002Kernicterus occurs in all parts of the world. The risk is increased in countries where glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficiency is common. In the 1990's more case reports of infants who developed kernicterus were published than in the previous decades. A combination of reduced concern for jaundice in newborns, early discharge with inadequate follow-

The Chemical Basis of Kernicterus
1960Publisher Summary The entire chemical basis of kernicterus has not yet been fully elucidated, although several major advances have been made in this direction. This chapter consists of a review of these advances and of the methods used in the study of bilirubin conjugation.
