The JNK-Like MAPK KGB-1 of Caenorhabditis Elegans Promotes Reproduction, Lifespan, and Gene Expressions for Protein Biosynthesis and Germline Homeostasis but Interferes with Hyperosmotic Stress Tolerance

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2014
Aims: This study focused on the role of the JNK-like MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) KGB-1 (kinase, GLH-binding 1) for osmoprotection and other vital functions.

Mathematical Modelling and Intuition in Microbiology: A Perspective. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol
Mathematical modelling in microbiology converts verbal reasoning into internally consistent hypotheses that can provide testable predictions, infer hidden parameters, and generate transferable intuition. By selecting an appropriate level of description, researchers can connect data to explanatory principles.

The structure of blocks with a Klein four defect group [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We prove Erdmann’s conjecture [16] stating that every block with a Klein four defect group has a simple module with trivial source, and deduce from this that Puig’s finiteness conjecture holds for source algebras of blocks with a Klein four defect group.

Sex differences in low-dose ethanol effects on motivated behavior and limbic corticostriatal activity in mice. [PDF]

open access: yesAlcohol Clin Exp Res (Hoboken)
Chronic, low‐dose ethanol exposure increased behavioral sensitivity to small changes in reward magnitude in female, but not male, mice. Chronic low‐dose ethanol also altered cFos expression within the prelimbic cortex and projections to the accumbens.

A block theoretic analogue of a theorem of Glauberman and Thompson [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
If p is an odd prime, G a finite group and P a Sylow-p-subgroup of G, a theorem of Glauberman and Thompson states that G is p-nilpotent if and only if NG(Z(J(P))) is p-nilpotent, where J(P) is the Thompson subgroup of P generated by all abelian subgroups
