The Chemical Nature of Kiln Brown Stain in Radiata Pine
Holzforschung, 2000Summary This paper presents results of a study on the chemical nature of kiln brown stain (KBS) that develops in kiln dried radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) sapwood. KBS is a chocolate brown discolouration which develops approximately 0.5 mm under the timber surface.

Two fumigants (methyl bromide and sulphuryl fluoride) were used to treat freshly sawn radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) lumber and log sections to evaluate their influence on development of kiln brown stain. Both treatments reduced severity of stain when compared with controls.

Application of a novel de-watering process to control kiln brown stain in radiata pine

ABSTRACT Brown stain makes the appearance of ponderosa pine shop lumber look dark, streaky, and splotchy, which often results in lumber downgrading. When brown stain occurs in a piece of shop lumber, it is often sorted separately and ultimately sold for a discount.

Influence of Kiln Venting on Brown Stain inPinus RadiataSapwood
Drying Technology, 2007This study assesses the influence of a closed drying environment on kiln brown stain in Pinus radiata sapwood. Three sets of matched timber samples (N = 50) were dried at low temperature (50°C), one without and two with kiln venting. Statistical analysis showed that the closed drying environment produced no significant change in the lightness (L∗) of ...
