Kin Selection

open access: yes, 2020
A foundational component of social evolution theory and a broader view of natural selection where fitness effects on genetic relatives are explicitly accounted for. Kin selection is particularly well known as an explanation for the evolution of altruism: a trait that is costly to its bearer can spread in a population if it has beneficial effects on ...

High‐Power Rapid Laser‐Induced Synthesis of Multi‐functional Cobalt Metal‐Organic Framework With an Unprecedented Synthesis Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Laser‐assisted synthesis enables rapid (within 1 h) and high‐yield (≥90%) production of Co‐MOFs with mesoporous structures, tunable magnetic and optical properties, and efficient adsorption of N2, CH4, and CO2 for low‐energy gas separation. DFT calculations elucidate the electronic structure and adsorption behavior.

Rzecz o nepotyzmie i kumoterstwie [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The paper comprises an introduction, four parts, and conclusions. The introduction char- acterizes the fundamental notions discussed in the paper, namely kin selection, nepotism, cronyism and political capitalism. The first part of the paper concerns kin

Shaping Carbon Nitrides for Advanced Macrostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review examines how carbon nitride can be shaped through a range of printing and interfacial assembly methods. By bringing together additive manufacturing and liquid–liquid structuring concepts, carbon nitride is moving beyond its traditional powder‐based photocatalyst form toward digitally designed robust macroscale architectures with high design

An assessment of the evidence from ATLAS3D for a variable initial mass function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The ATLAS3D Survey has reported evidence for a non-universal stellar initial mass function (IMF) for early type galaxies (ETGs) (Cappellari et al. 2012, 2013b,a).

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

Linked selection and the evolution of altruism in family‐structured populations

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Much research on the evolution of altruism via kin selection, group selection, and reciprocity focuses on the role of a single locus or quantitative trait.

Paternal kin recognition in the high frequency / ultrasonic range in a solitary foraging mammal

open access: yesBMC Ecology, 2012
Background Kin selection is a driving force in the evolution of mammalian social complexity. Recognition of paternal kin using vocalizations occurs in taxa with cohesive, complex social groups.

Soft Robotic Snake with Tunable Undulatory Gait for Efficient Underwater Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study designs an underwater soft snake robot using 3D‐printed soft actuators, controlled by specific signals to generate sinusoidal undulation. Results show a positive correlation between speed and swing amplitude, with optimal performance at 2/3π phase offset, PLA tail, 1.2 voltage growth rate, and 6s undulation period achieving a maximum speed ...
