Over-expression of MAP kinase phosphatase-2 enhances adhesion molecule expression and protects against apoptosis in human endothelial cells

open access: yes, 2010
In this study we used adenovirus infection to overexpress the dual specific phosphatase, MAP kinase phosphatase-2 (MKP-2), in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and examined inflammatory protein expression and apoptosis, two key features of ...

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Myocardial protection by insulin at reperfusion requires early administration and is mediated via Akt and p70s6 kinase cell-survival signaling

open access: yes, 2001
The "metabolic cocktail" comprising glucose-insulin-potassium administrated at reperfusion reduces infarct size in the in vivo rat heart. We propose that insulin is the major component mediating this protection and acts via Akt prosurvival signaling ...

The identification of the Tao-1 kinase as a key regulator of microtubule dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In a multicellular animal, the different functions of cells are dependent on their diversity of shapes. Protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation play an important role in altering the cell shape in response to internal and external signals. In this

DNA methylation and expression of MAPRE3 affect overall survival of early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Both cg12821679MAPRE3 methylation and MAPRE3 expression are significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of non‐small cell lung cancer. Meanwhile, MAPRE3 expression significantly modified the effect of smoking cessation on OS. Smoking cessation benefits OS merely for patients with high MAPRE3 expression.

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Stimulator of interferon genes agonist augmented antitumor immunity of osimertinib in Egfr‐mutated lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining osimertinib with the STING agonist ADU‐S100 activates innate and adaptive immunity to overcome the non‐inflamed microenvironment of Egfr‐mutant lung cancer. This combination increases NK and CD8+ T‐cell infiltration, associated with activation of the STING‐IRF3 pathway and local immunogenic cell death.

The effect of the dual Src/Abl kinase inhibitor AZD0530 on Philadelphia positive leukaemia cell lines

open access: yes, 2009
Background Imatinib mesylate, a selective inhibitor of Abl tyrosine kinase, is efficacious in treating chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).
