Crack growth resistance in nuclear graphite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
R-curve behaviour is often used for evaluating crack growth resistance in quasibrittle materials but few studies have focused on polycrystalline graphite. In this study, R-curve behaviour in three commercial grade nuclear graphites, of varying structure

Kinked-Helix Actinide Polyrotaxanes from Weakly Bound Pseudorotaxane Linkers with Variable Conformations

open access: yes, 2020
The incorporation of a mechanically interlocked molecule such as pseudorotaxane into metal–organic coordination polymers has afforded plenty of new hybrid materials with special structures and unique properties.

Cryogenic Deformation Behavior of TiAl and Insights Into Embrittlement After High‐Temperature Exposure Combined With Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy of Near Surface Chemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Near‐surface deuterium enrichment profiles for different microstructural types of TiAl after exposure at 700 °C in a heavy water‐containing environment. The deuterium levels are significantly higher than expected from natural occurrence, indicating that the heavy water dissociated during the exposure treatment and entered the specimens.

Kinking angles for interface cracks

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2011
AbstractBi-material components such as ceramic/ceramic or silicon/glass bonds are used extensively in different industrial applications. The presence of cracks in the interface of such bonded joints influences their mechanical strength significantly.

A numerical study of crack shielding and deflection under extensive plasticity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Experimentally observed crack deflection events in multi-layered material systems, occurring even under pure mode-I loading, are here simulated and explained through elasto-plastic finite element modelling.

Measuring the Hall Effect in Hysteretic Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The authors highlight common pitfalls in measuring the Hall effect: in hysteretic magnets, improper data processing can create signals that look exotic but are not real. This Perspective explains the origin of these artifacts and presents practical measurement strategies that help researchers identify reliable Hall responses in complex magnetic ...

ANALYSIS OF CRACK-MICROCRACK INTERACTIONS AND DOUBLY KINKED CRACKS USING MULTIPLE SINGULAR POINTS ELEMENTS

open access: yes, 1991
The problems of crack-microcrack interactions and doubly kinked cracks have been analysed by the finite element method. In the first case the main crack tip SIF has been evaluated for different length of a collinear microcrack, which is located at a ...

The effect of residual stresses arising from laser shock peening on fatigue crack growth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Residual stresses have in the past been introduced to manipulate growth rates and shapes of cracks under cyclic loads. Previously, the effectiveness of shot peening in retarding the rate of fatigue crack growth was experimentally studied.

Flax Composites With Improved Interfacial Strength Through Microbially Induced Mineral Precipitation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A bio‐inspired biomineralization strategy introduces an additional hierarchy to flax fiber composites. By controlling microbe‐mediated mineral particle deposition through tuned salt concentrations, stress transfer within the natural fiber composite is enhanced.

Prediction of fretting crack propagation based on a short crack methodology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Fretting tests have been conducted to determine the maximum crack extension under partial slip conditions, as a function of the applied tangential force amplitude.
