An analysis of various descriptions of state of strain in the linear Kirchhoff-Love type shell theory

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 1980
In the first part of the paper several methods of describing the state of strain in the thin shell with Kirchhoff-Love constraints are discussed. Among others Kilchevsky's idea of the description of the state of strain in an arbitrary point of the shell

Functional morphology of trabecular bone in the calcaneus of African apes

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 4, Page 883-898, October 2026.
Pan exhibits significantly higher calcaneal tuberosity trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and bone volume fraction (BV/TV) than Gorilla, potentially reflecting higher triceps surae forces for vertical climbing. Both taxa have significantly higher Tb.Th and BV/TV in the anterior calcaneus; the difference is exaggerated in Gorilla, potentially reflecting ...

Determining properties of human‐induced pluripotent stem cell‐derived cardiomyocytes using spatially resolved electromechanical metrics

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 19, Page 8069-8099, 1 October 2026.
Abstract figure legend In this study, we use human‐induced pluripotent stem cell‐derived cardiomyocyte (hiPSC‐CM) experiments and computational modelling to identify the mechanism of action of drug compounds. In the hiPSC‐CM experiments, optical measurements of cell collections are recorded in the baseline case and after drug exposure.

Maximum‐Entropy‐Based Meshless Modeling of Surface‐Tension‐Driven Large Deformation

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, Volume 127, Issue 17, 15 September 2026.
ABSTRACT Soft material modeling is challenging due, among others, to the substantial structural changes these materials undergo. In this context, meshless methods offer a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of established mesh‐based approximations such as finite elements. However, they introduce new challenges.

A hierarchical approach to the a posteriori error estimation of isogeometric Kirchhoff plates and Kirchhoff–Love shells

open access: yes
This work focuses on the development of a posteriori error estimates for fourth-order, elliptic, partial differential equations. In particular, we propose a novel algorithm to steer an adaptive simulation in the context of Kirchhoff plates and Kirchhoff ...

Hybrid Coupling With Operator Inference and the Overlapping Schwarz Alternating Method

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, Volume 127, Issue 17, 15 September 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a hybrid approach for coupling subdomain‐local, nonintrusive Operator Inference (OpInf) reduced order models (ROMs) with each other and with subdomain‐local, high‐fidelity full order models (FOMs) using the overlapping Schwarz alternating method (O‐SAM).

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 17, 9 September 2026.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.
