Conforming approximations for Kirchhoff plates and shells

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1979
AbstractFinite element interpolations of arbitrary polynomial degree which are exactly and minimally C1 continuous across interelement boundaries are studied. A perspective view of the techniques proposed by other authors is presented and some new possibilities are considered.

Improvement of the Kirchhoff approximation for metallic and dielectric surfaces

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1990
In a previous paper [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A6, 532 ( 1989)], a simple formula for representing the surface current density generated by an incident beam illuminating a two-dimensional deterministic perfectly conducting rough surface was drawn from elementary calculations.

Diffractive corrections to the high-frequency Kirchhoff approximation

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1986
Diffractive corrections to the physical optics solution for the scattering of high-frequency sound by a random rough pressure release surface are derived. The correction terms are obtained by applying the composite-roughness theory to an expansion of the scattering integral.

Scattering of light by crystals: a full Kirchhoff approximation

Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1991
The theoretical foundation of the Kirchhoff approximation for light scattering by optically isotropic and homogeneous crystals was presented by Muinonen.1 In that approximation, the reflected and transmitted electromagnetic near fields were calculated from geometric optics ray-tracing.

Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction in optical systems: an approximate computational algorithm

Applied Optics, 1984
A method is outlined for approximation of scalar wave disturbances via the Fresnel-Kirchoff formula. While the method is limited to evaluating the disturbance along spherical reference surfaces, no particular inconvenience arises from this constraint in the context of many optical designs.
