Knee Prosthesis in the Computer Era [PDF]
Over the past two decades, computer assistance has revolutionalized surgery and has enabled enormous advancements in knee prosthesis surgery. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a hot topic of orthopaedic research. Reflecting population dynamics, its use continues to increase, especially in high demand populations.

An extendable modular endoprosthetic system for bone tumour management in the leg [PDF]
A modular endoprosthetic system has been developed at the Groningen University Hospital and the University of Twente. The system can bridge a defect resulting from the resection of a malignant bone tumour which has developed around the knee joint of a ...

Treatment of the exposed knee prosthesis [PDF]
Ten knees with early tissue breakdown after knee arthroplasty resulting in exposed prostheses were treated with different plastic surgical techniques. Six knees were successfully covered: four using a gastrocnemius musculocutaneous flap, one using a fasciocutaneous flap, and one using split-skin grafts. Four knees failed: two using local skin flaps and

Effects of Prosthesis Mass on Hip Energetics, Prosthetic Knee Torque, and Prosthetic Knee Stiffness and Damping Parameters Required for Transfemoral Amputees to Walk With Normative Kinematics [PDF]
We quantify how the hip energetics and knee torque required for an above-knee prosthesis user to walk with the kinematics of able-bodied humans vary with the inertial properties of the prosthesis. We also select and optimize passive mechanical components

Early and late results of the GUEPAR hinge knee prosthesis were evaluated on a series of 184 operations performed before January 1st, 1974. There were 3 immediate deaths and 26 before 5 years. Nineteen prostheses were removed. One hundred and twenty-six knees had degenerative osteoarthritis, 52 rheumatoid arthritis.

Revision rates after primary hip and knee replacement in England between 2003 and 2006 [PDF]
Background: Hip and knee replacement are some of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world. Resurfacing of the hip and unicondylar knee replacement are increasingly being used.

Abstract Prosthetic instability is the third most frequent cause for the failure of total knee replacement (TKR), which leads to between 10% and 22% of surgical revisions. In addition to individual factors such as previous instabilities or deformities, an associated neuromuscular condition, rheumatoid arthritis or obesity, the main causes for ...

The mechanics of the knee and prosthesis design [PDF]
The mechanisms controlling and limiting movement and serving to transmit load between the femur and the tibia are discussed. Having accounted for the transmission of all components of force and couple across the joint and noted the load-bearing role of the menisci, some principles which might guide the design of knee prostheses are deduced.

Revision of tumor prosthesis of the knee joint [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Among 40 patients with primary malignant tumors of the knee joint who underwent reconstruction of the affected limb with tumor prosthesis, revision was required in 7 due to stem breakage or loosening. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In the 7 cases undergoing revision, conditions and background factors at the time of breakage, the breakage site, time

ARTHROPLASTY OF THE KNEE BY THE WALLDLUS PROSTHESIS [PDF]
1. Forty-five arthroplasties of the knee with the Walldius prosthesis are reported in forty-two patients, thirty-seven with rheumatoid arthritis and five with osteoarthritis. 2. There has been no structural failure of the prosthesis. 3. Sepsis required removal of the prosthesis in three cases, but arthrodesis was obtained in two of the three.
