Influence of Knudsen and Mach numbers on Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

Physical Review E, 2021
The combined influence of rarefaction and compressibility on classical Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is investigated with numerical simulations employing the unified gas kinetic scheme. Five different regimes in the Reynolds-Mach-Knudsen number parameter space are identified.

On the Peristaltic Transport in Small-Knudsen-Number Flow

Meccanica, 2000
The authors show that the mean streamwise distribution (averaged over time) due to the peristaltic motion in the case of free pumping is dominated by \(R_0\) (or \(K_n\)), which allow to determine the boundary value \(D_y\) of the \(y\)-gradient of the first-order streamwise velocity distribution.

On the use of the Knudsen number and aerosol Knudsen number in the kinetics of Brownian coagulation of aerosols

Colloid & Polymer Science, 1984
We consider, on the basis of dimensional analysis, the use of the Knudsen number and aerosol Knudsen number in the kinetics of Brownian coagulation of aerosols. The aerosol Knudsen numberKnp emerges naturally when one assumes that the aerosol particle motion can be described in terms of Brownian motion.

Low Knudsen number photophoresis

Journal of Aerosol Science, 1977
Abstract An analytical expression describing the photophoretic force on a spherical aerosol particle in the low Knudsen number regime is developed in terms of relevant dimensionless parameters. The effect of thermal creep as well as contributing low Knudsen number effects of gas slippage and temperature jump at the gas-particle interface are included

Low-Knudsen-number transport and deposition

Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology A: Vacuum, Surfaces, and Films, 1994
We present our model for transport and deposition in features for situations in which intermolecular collisions dominate the species transport. Species transport in this ‘‘low’’-Knudsen-number regime is modeled using continuum diffusion. Our model allows both homogeneous reactions and heterogeneous (surface) reactions.

Approximating Collisional Freestream Attenuation at Transitional Knudsen Numbers

AIAA Journal, 1997
When a body such as an instrument package is immersed in a rarefied flowfield, the result is a distortion of the freestream. This perturbation is a stumbling block for code developers seeking reliable experimental data for comparison with flowfield predictors.

Photophoretic force on particles for low Knudsen number

Applied Optics, 1983
Calculations are presented for the photophoretic force on a spherical aerosol particle with size much larger than the mean free path of the surrounding gas molecules. Very good agreement is shown with recent experimental data. The results show that both components of the complex refractive index can be inferred from radiometric measurements.

The Effects of Geometry and Knudsen Numbers on Micro- and Nanochannel Flows

ASME 2011 9th International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels, and Minichannels, Volume 2, 2011
In this work we use a three dimensional Molecular Dynamics simulation method to study the effect of different geometries and Knudsen number regimes on the gas flow in micro-nanochannels. Argon molecules have been used for the simulations. Thermal wall and diffusive-specular wall types were used for the boundaries of the channels.
