Stochastic Dynamics of Fusion Low-to-High Confinement Mode (L-H) Transition: Correlation and Causal Analyses Using Information Geometry [PDF]
We investigate the stochastic dynamics of the prey–predator model of the Low-to-High confinement mode (L-H) transition in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. By considering stochastic noise in the turbulence and zonal flows as well as constant and time-

On the origin of the DIII-D L-H power threshold isotope effect
The increased low to high confinement mode (L to H-mode) power threshold $P_\mathrm{LH}$ in DIII-D low collisionality hydrogen plasmas (compared to deuterium) is shown to result from lower impurity (carbon) content, consistent with reduced (mass ...

L–H transition threshold studies in helium plasmas at JET [PDF]
We present a study of the power threshold for L–H transitions (PLH) in almost pure helium plasmas, obtained in recent experiments at JET with an ITER-like wall (Be wall and W divertor). The most notable new result is that the density at which PLH is minimum, ${\bar{n}}_{\text{e},\mathrm{min}}$, is considerably higher for helium than for deuterium and ...

Based on a heuristic model of the scrape-off-layer (SOL) plasma dynamics, a new type of limit-cycle-oscillation (LCO) is shown to be possible in the SOL region.

Dynamics of stimulated L → H transitions [PDF]
We report on model studies of stimulated L → H transitions [K. Miki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 195002 (2013)]. These studies use a reduced mesoscale model. Model studies reveal that L → H transition can be triggered by particle injection into a subcritical state (i.e., P<PThresh). Particle injection changes edge mean flow shear via changes of

L-H transition in tokamaks and stellarators [PDF]
H-mode theory is extended to include realistic effects such as charge-exchange momentum loss associated with neutral particles, and the magnetic stresses induced by the magnetic islands. Local critical plasma parameters for the on-set of the bifurcation are obtained and can be compared quantatively with experimental measurements.

L-H transition studies on MAST: power threshold and heat flux analysis
Spherical tokamaks are known to differ from conventional tokamaks in a number of physics areas, but our understanding is limited by a comparative lack of experimental data.
