A Comparison of L2-L2 and L2-Heritage Learner Interactions in Spanish Language Classrooms

The Modern Language Journal, 2014
Conversational interaction studies have typically focused either on second language (L2) learners participating in native speaker–nonnative speaker (NS–NNS) dyads or in NNS–NNS dyads. This study analyzes the task‐based interactions of 26 naturally occurring learner dyads in an intermediate‐level, university Spanish language classroom, 13 of which were ...

L2 Designer

2016
We propose a new format to define parametric L-systems L2 language and its implementation in JavaScript L2 Designer. Our language allows us to create formal definition of the hierarchy of L-systems. The L2 Designer enables us to discover L-system grammars by means of interactive evolution - the common method used in Evolutionary art.

Phonetic Dissimilarity and L2 Category Formation in L2 Accommodation

Language and Speech, 2023
Many studies of speech accommodation focus on native speakers with different dialects, whereas only a limited number of studies work on L2 speakers’ accommodation and discuss theories for second language (L2) accommodation. This paper aimed to fill the theoretical gap by integrating the revised speech learning model (SLM) with the exemplar-based models

L2 Interactional Competence and L2 Education

2021
I have been invited, in this discussion piece, to offer my view on the opportunities and challenges that arise, for L2 education, from empirical studies on L2 acquisition. In this chapter, I therefore lay out what I see as central conditions for L2 education to move toward a more systematic concern with L2 learners' abilities to participate in social ...

How L2 words are stored: The episodic L2 hypothesis.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2012
This article reports findings from 3 experiments examining whether 2nd language (L2) words are represented in episodic memory, as originally proposed by Jiang and Forster (2001). Experiment 1 was a direct replication of Jiang and Forster, testing highly proficient Chinese-English bilinguals.

Thinking for Speaking in an L2:

2020
Since its formulation in the 1990s, Slobin’s thinking-for-speaking (TFS) hypothesis has gained increasing attention in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) (e.g. Cadierno, 2008a; Han & Cadierno, 2010; Pavlenko, 2011). Under this perspective, learning a second/foreign language (L2) entails learning alternative ways of thinking for speaking

L2 kernel classification.

IEEE transactions on pattern analysis and machine intelligence, 2010
Nonparametric kernel methods are widely used and proven to be successful in many statistical learning problems. Well-known examples include the kernel density estimate (KDE) for density estimation and the support vector machine (SVM) for classification.

On L1 Transfer in L2 Comprehension and L2 Production*

Language Learning, 1992
Previous studies of transfer have dealt with its effects on either speaking or writing, whereas the effects on reading and listening have been neglected. In this paper, transfer is examined in relation to the different demands that the four language modalities make on the learner. The main differences between L2 comprehension and L2 production concern ...
