Use of pure vanadium and niobium/copper inserts for laser welding of titanium to stainless steel

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Joining Processes, 2020
Niobium and vanadium have high metallurgical compatibility with titanium and therefore can be used as inserts to avoid the accumulation of brittle intermetallic phases such as Fe2Ti during the fusion welding of titanium alloys with steels. In the present

Using a social‐ecological macrosystems framework to understand how human activities alter ecological synchrony

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Different aspects of ecological systems, biotic or abiotic, often fluctuate in coordinated patterns over space and time. Such high concordance between ecological processes is often referred to as ecological synchrony. Human activities, including and beyond climate change, have the potential to alter ecological synchrony by disrupting or ...

On the formation of hot DQ white dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present the first full evolutionary calculations aimed at exploring the origin of hot DQ white dwarfs. These calculations consistently cover the whole evolution from the born-again stage to the white dwarf cooling track.

Tracing holotype trajectories: Mapping the movement of the most valuable herbarium specimens

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Global efforts to protect biodiversity depend on fair access to key plant specimens. This study examines the distribution of 119,361 holotypes—unique herbarium specimens used to formally describe new plant species. By linking collection and storage data, we found that holotypes are increasingly held closer to their places of origin, particularly in ...

Harvesting of two alpine Artemisia: Effects of an amateur practice on wild plant dynamics

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Wild plants are consumed all over the world, and knowledge of the effects of harvesting is necessary to ensure the sustainability of this activity. Our 3‐year study of two closely related alpine Artemisia species in the Southern Alps revealed a positive impact of harvesting at the plant scale and on the short term.

A New Timescale for Period Change in the Pulsating DA White Dwarf WD 0111+0018 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We report the most rapid rate of period change measured to date for a pulsating DA (hydrogen atmosphere) white dwarf (WD), observed in the 292.9 s mode of WD 0111+0018. The observed period change, faster than 10^{-12} s/s, exceeds by more than two orders
