Tree species identity is associated with rhizosphere microbiome assembly via root metabolite‐mediated feedbacks in subtropical forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The rhizosphere microbiome is critical for forest ecological functions, yet the mechanisms through which tree species identity and neighbour tree interactions are associated with its assembly remain poorly understood.

Ecological scale mediates nonlinear relationships of animal nutrient excretion with dissolved organic matter

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We show that nutrient excretion by vertebrates and invertebrates varies nonlinearly with dissolved organic matter concentration and composition and by taxonomic rank, with stronger patterns at the individual compared to the community level. Our findings highlight the importance of examining animal‐mediated nutrient cycling across taxa and ecological ...

Rhizosphere Engineering by Root Exudates: High‐Yielding Alfalfa Recruits Functional PGPR to Sustain Soil Nutrient Availability Under Long‐Term Cultivation

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soil nutrient transformation capacity is a critical determinant of sustainable productivity in perennial cropping systems; however, the extent to which high‐yielding crops actively regulate rhizosphere microbial assembly to maintain nutrient availability remains poorly understood.

Tropical savanna restoration: topsoil removal and direct‐seeding promote a biodiverse and invasion‐resistant community

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Open ecosystems, such as native grasslands and savannas, cover vast tropical areas and sustain multiple ecosystem services. However, they face intense degradation due to conversion into pastures with exotic grasses that invade natural ecosystems.

Re‐thinking corn phosphorus requirements: Can we optimize timing to get by with less?

open access: yesAgricultural &Environmental Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, December 2026.
Abstract Below‐optimum soil phosphorus (P) levels limit crop production, while excess P transported from agricultural landscapes to surface water contributes to eutrophication. Improvements in P‐utilization efficiency (PUE) would benefit agro‐economic efficiency and water quality.
