‘What is labour law for?’ is a question with a past. I therefore begin by sketching out its history. It has a present too, whose most striking feature – I argue – may well be the end of ‘labour.’ And of course it has a future: what will labour law look like ‘after labour?’ I address all three questions largely from a North American perspective, but ...

Cognitive psychology has provided some tools for understanding how effort impacts performance, by linking effort with cognitive control function ...

Unreported labour by one worker in a firm increases the probability of detection for his fellow workers, not only for himself. The firm takes this external effect into account. As a consequence, unreported work becomes rationed by the firms demand, rather than determined by demand equal supply. The gap between supply and demand increases with firm size.

Spontaneous preterm labour remains a major obstetric problem because of the high incidence of neonatal mortality or long-term handicap associated with it. The drugs available for the management of preterm labour are poorly effective and have potentially serious side-effects for the mother or fetus.

Studies in the past year have clarified the roles of inflammatory mediators in preterm labour. Exploration of possible genetic predisposition is just beginning. Ultrasound measurement of cervical length has the potential to predict women at risk of preterm delivery several weeks before it occurs.

Intravenously administered salbutamol inhibited premature labour for at least 48 hours in 49 of 76 patients (64%), but was more effective (89%) when the cervical dilatation was less than 2 cm, and no apparent cause for the premature labour was evident. Even when premature labour complicated multiple pregnancy, hydramnios, or followed a small antepartum
