“Nowhere else to go”: Slow abandonment and (en)closures of long‐term care in Los Angeles

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Residential long‐term care facilities, known in California as “board and care” homes, have been closing rapidly in the last decade. Proponents assert these provide vital forms of housing and care to the poor and must be saved, while critics contend they perpetuate the institutionalization of people with disabilities and should be abolished ...

A Single‐Nucleotide Substitution Generates a de Novo Promoter That Activates a Latent Metabolic Bypass in Escherichia coli

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
A chromosomal mutation allows bypass of deletion of the Escherichia coli fabH gene. The bypass results from creation of a new promoter that drives increased madA transcription, resulting in increased synthesis of acetyl‐acyl carrier protein by decarboxylation of malonyl‐acyl carrier protein.

A Nutrient‐Responsive LuxR Regulator Orchestrates Effector Gene Expression Across the Legionella Genus

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
LexR1 is a LuxR‐type regulator that links nutrient sensing to effector gene expression in Legionella. Activated by a casamino acid‐derived ligand, LexR1 directly controls multiple effector genes using a conserved regulatory element present in numerous putative effectors across different Legionella species.

The Role of torS and torT Transcription in Driving a Bet‐Hedging Strategy for Trimethylamine N‐Oxide Reductase Expression in Escherichia coli

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
Low basal activity of divergent promoters driving transcription of the trimethylamine N‐oxide (TMAO) sensor TorT and kinase TorS is integral to an O2‐regulated bet‐hedging strategy for continued E. coli growth upon the onset of anaerobiosis. This, along with repression by IscR, promotes noise in the TorS to TorT ratio, which is critical for adaptation ...
