Modelling the lactation curve of dairy cows using the differentials of growth functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Descriptions of entire lactations were investigated using six mathematical equations. comprising the differentials of four growth functions (logistic. Gompertz, Schumacher and Morgan) and two other equations (Wood and Dijkstra).

The use of mid-infrared spectrometry to predict body energy status of Holstein cows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Energy balance, especially in early lactation, is known to be associated with subsequent health and fertility in dairy cows. However, its inclusion in routine management decisions or breeding programs is hindered by the lack of quick, easy, and ...

An empirical analysis of the cost of rearing dairy heifers from birth to first calving and the time taken to repay these costs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Rearing quality dairy heifers is essential to maintain herds by replacing culled cows. Information on the key factors influencing the cost of rearing under different management systems is, however, limited and many farmers are unaware of their true costs.

Sow body condition at weaning and reproduction performance in organic piglet production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The objective was to investigate the variation in backfat at weaning and its relations to reproduction results in organic sow herds in Denmark. The study included eight herds and 573 sows.

Body Condition Score and Milk Production on Conception Rate of Cows under a Small-Scale Dairy System

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
Management and production characteristics impact conception rate to first service (CR1S) in small-scale dairy farms, but the impact of body condition score (BCS) and milk production levels on cows’ fertility is unknown.

Relationship between season, lactation number and incidence of clinical mastitis in different stages of lactation in a Holstein dairy farm.

open access: yesVeterinary research forum : an international quarterly journal, 2013
The aim of the present study was to compare the occurrence and duration of clinical mastitis in different seasons, stages of lactation period and parities in a Holstein dairy farm in Iran. A retrospective epidemiological survey from April 2005 to March 2008 was conducted on 884 clinical mastitis cases of 7437 lactations.

Effect of lactation stage, its number, current milk performance and barn air temperature on laterality of Holstein dairy cows laying behaviour

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2011
The aim of this study was to determine effect of lactation stage and number, current milk performance and ambient temperature on laterality of dairy cows laying behaviour (i.e. preference of either left or right body side).

Red blood cell counts in sows during lactation [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinarski Glasnik, 2010
In the course of parturition and lactation, sows are susceptible to stress and make an effort to adapt to the newly-formed situation through different endocrine and metabolic mechanisms.

CANADIAN DAIRY COW DISPOSALS: I. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BREEDS, LACTATION NUMBERS AND SEASONS [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Animal Science, 1971
Primary reasons for disposal of 26,651 dairy cows of the Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein and Jersey breeds were collected in Canadian Record of Performance herds from September, 1967 to August, 1968. Reproduction and low milk production were major causes of voluntary herd removals. The percentages culled annually for these problems ranged from 13.4 to 24.
