The role of Lactobacillus in diseases and its intervention by Chinese herbs
Introduction: Lactobacilli are a group of Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the family Lactobacillaceae within the phylum Firmicutes. They colonize the intestinal tract and play a significant role in human health and disease treatment, serving ...

Vaginal pH measured in vivo: lactobacilli determine pH and lactic acid concentration
Background Lactic acid (protonated lactate) has broad antimicrobial activity. Vaginal lactobacilli produce lactic acid, and are known to confer protection against reproductive tract infections when they are predominant in the vaginal microbiota.

Schematic overview illustrating the detrimental role of gut microbiota in aspirin‐induced intestinal injury. L. sphaericus and its secreted carboxylesterase EstB are identified as key drivers that catalyze aspirin hydrolysis into salicylic acid, thereby exacerbating intestinal injury. Inhibition of EstB by the dietary compound flavanomarein effectively

A fixed combination of probiotics and herbal extracts attenuates intestinal barrier dysfunction from inflammatory stress in an in vitro model using Caco-2 cells. [PDF]
Background: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), are considered a growing global disease, with about ten million people being affected worldwide. Maintenance of intestinal barrier integrity is crucial for preventing IBD onset and exacerbations. Some recent

Oncolytic Probiotics with Molecular Pili for Solid Tumor Therapy
This study identifies Lactobacillus rhamnosus as an intrinsic oncolytic agent that triggers tumor metabolic collapse via calcium‐dependent ROS bursts. By chemically anchoring collagen‐targeting “molecular pili” to the bacterial surface, the engineered non‐transgenic probiotic (LR@MP) achieves targeted colonization and potent solid tumor suppression ...

ABSTRACT Immune homeostasis is indispensable for preserving organismal integrity, orchestrated through complex molecular networks encompassing immune cell dynamics, microbial cues, and epigenetic regulation. Among these, the gut microbiota‐non‐coding RNA (ncRNA) axis has recently garnered substantial attention as a multifaceted modulator of host ...

Chronic oral exposure to microplastics may disrupt gut microbiota homeostasis and intestinal barrier integrity, potentially engaging the gut–brain axis and systemic inflammatory responses. These alterations may be associated with impaired blood–brain barrier function, cerebral microvascular dysfunction, and enhanced endothelial inflammation, pro ...

A Serological Classification of Lactobacilli [PDF]
SUMMARY: A collection of 442 strains of lactobacilli, including representatives of all recognized species and 190 freshly isolated strains was studied serologically. Using sera prepared against some of these strains and crude HCl extracts, it was possible to classify 312 (70%) of these strains by precipitin tests into six groups and one subgroup.
