Carbon stable isotopes ratios of pelagic and littoral communities in Alchichica crater-lake, Mexico

International Journal of Salt Lake Research, 1998
Carbon stable isotope ratios were determined in dominant biotic components of pelagic and littoral systems in Alchichica crater-lake. Results showed that carbon signatures were significantly different between both systems. The pelagic environment was more depleted (−26.15 to −15.14 per mille) than the littoral zone (−21.03 to −17.91 per mille).

On the ecology of Caecidotea williamsi Escobar-Briones & Alcocer (Crustacea: Isopoda: Asellidae) from Alchichica saline lake, Central Mexico

Hydrobiologia, 2007
Caecidotea williamsi Escobar-Briones & Alcocer (2002) is the first asellid described from a saline aquatic habitat in America, Alchichica crater-lake, Puebla, Central Mexico. No previous reports exist for asellid isopods from inland saline waters in America in spite of the extensive research undertaken so far on the continent.

Nitrogen fixation patterns displayed by cyanobacterial consortia in Alchichica crater-lake, Mexico

Hydrobiologia, 2002
Alchichica is a saline crater-lake located in Mexico. Tufa grows on its periphery and a wind-driven Nodularia cf. spumigena bloom occurs annually. Fixation rates were assayed by the acetylene reduction method. Here, we describe the patterns of nitrogen fixation on two tufa forms before, during and after the bloom, as well as those from the planktonic ...

Lipid Biomarkers in Microbialites from a Maar Lake: An Astrobiological Study of Biomarker Preservation under Mars Analog Conditions

Astrobiology
Lipids constitute resistant biomarkers that have been proposed as pacemakers in the search for possible microbial life-forms in Mars’ past. The extreme conditions on the surface of Mars—such as high levels of radiation and the presence of brines and/or ...

Long-term picocyanobacteria development in an athalassohaline warm-monomictic Lake Alchichica: Virus- vs. ciliate-control?

2013
Autotrophic picoplankton (APP) was monitored regularly in Lake Alchichica (Puebla/Veracruz; Mexico) for nearly 10 years. In the present study, the control of APP development by viruses is analysed. The maximum cyanobacteria abundance was localised within the water column using WET-Labs ECO Triplet fluorometer and oxygen production by 2µm fraction was ...
