Estimation of the eddy diffusivity coefficient in a warm monomictic tropical Lake
We used a two-year dataset (1998-1999) of monthly temperature profiles from Lake Alchichica, Mexico to estimate values of the vertical coefficient of eddy diffusivity.

Identifying microbial life in rocks: Insights from population morphometry
Abstract The identification of cellular life in the rock record is problematic, since microbial life forms, and particularly bacteria, lack sufficient morphologic complexity to be effectively distinguished from certain abiogenic features in rocks. Examples include organic pore‐fillings, hydrocarbon‐containing fluid inclusions, organic coatings on ...

Cyanobacterial calcification in modern microbialites at the submicrometer scale [PDF]
The search for microfossils in the geological record has been a long-term challenge. Part of the problem comes from the difficulty of identifying such microfossils unambiguously, since they can be morphologically confused with abiotic biomorphs.

Genetic diversity associated with N-cycle pathways in microbialites from Lake Alchichica, Mexico [PDF]
Author(s): Alcantara-Hernandez, RJ; Valdespino-Castillo, PM; Centeno, CM; Alcocer, J; Merino-Ibarra, M; Falcon, LI | Abstract: Microbialites are an example of complex and diverse microbial assemblages where several metabolic pathways are interconnected for biomass formation coupled to mineral precipitation.

Dynamic response to mountain breeze circulation in Alchichica, a crater lake in Mexico [PDF]
In this paper we discuss the dynamic response to mountain breeze circulation in Alchichica, a deep crater lake in Mexico. A numerical model was used to simulate integrated drift currents based on wind data sampled at 1‐h intervals. The results are compared with those measured by an ADCP.

Bacterial size and morphology are controlled by several factors including predation, viral lysis, UV radiation, and inorganic nutrients. We observed that bacterial biovolume from the hypolimnion of two oligotrophic lakes is larger than that of bacteria ...

Ciliate food vacuole content and bacterial community composition in the warm-monomictic crater Lake Alchichica, México [PDF]
To evaluate trophic relationships between ciliates and bacterioplankton during the stratification period in a lake, samples from three different layers [the upper part of the metalimnion (UM), the base of the metalimnion (BM) and the hypolimnion] were studied. The autotrophic picoplankton numbers, phylogenetic composition of heterotrophic picoplankton (

The phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a, Chl-a) is directly related to the total production of lakes. Chl-a in temperate lakes oscillates on an annual scale. However, Chl-a oscillations in tropical lakes have hardly been documented, particularly over multiple years.

AbstractBetter understanding the conditions of formation of authigenic Mg‐silicates and their reactivity is key to interpret the palaeoenvironmental message carried by the sedimentary record and evaluate the effect of reverse weathering, a process involved in long‐term climate evolution.
