Autosomal dominant lamellar ichthyosis

Five members of two generations of one family were affected with lamellar ichthyosis, suggesting autosomal dominant transmission. The clinical and histopathological characteristics of the cases described here are similar to those reported by Traupe et al.

Microbial keratitis in a case of lamellar ichthyosis

We report a case of microbial keratitis in a patient with lamellar ichthyosis. An 11-year-old boy, a known case of lamellar ichthyosis, presented with microbial keratitis. Microbiological evaluation of corneal scraping revealed a mixed infection caused by gram-negative bacilli and gram-positive cocci.

Biopsy specimens from patients with lamellar ichthyosis were studied by histologic, enzyme histochemical, and electron microscopic methods. Routine sections were not diagnostic, showing hyperkeratosis, normal or thickened granular zone, and acanthosis and papillomatosis.

A 35-year-old woman presented with bilateral lower lid ectropion associated with lamellar ichthyosis. She was successfully treated with postauricular skin grafts and horizontal lid shortenings. This report reviews the literature on the surgical management of this condition and suggests several modifications to prevent recurrence.

Summary and ConclusionsNine cases (six males and three females) of ichthyosis of the lamellar exfoliative type occurred among 22 offspring in three related families of German origin. All six parents have a common ancestor and are first cousins or fourth cousins once removed. Inheritance is by an autosomal recessive gene with 100%penetrance.
