Dynamic characteristics and stability of a journal bearing in a non-laminar lubrication regime

Abstract A mathematical model to determine the stiffness and damping coefficients and the stability limit curves of a journal bearing in a non-laminar lubrication regime is described. The results show the flow regime influence on the dynamic characteristics of cylindrical bearings and on the stability of a rigid rotor on rigid supports.

Abstract An experimental and simulation study on free bubbling vertical slug flow in laminar regime in the main liquid and turbulent regime in the near-wake bubble region is reported. A non-intrusive image analysis technique and a previously developed slug flow simulator (SFS) were used.

The distribution of “effective viscosity”—assumed dependent on local shear and temperature—is obtained via iteration between the “long bearing” momentum and energy equations. In this treatment the shaft is isothermal and the bearing conducts heat only in the radial direction.
