The Lancelet and Ammocoete Mouths

Zoological Science, 2008
The evolutionary history of the vertebrate mouth has long been an intriguing issue in comparative zoology. When the prevertebrate state was considered, the oral structure in adult lancelets (amphioxus) was traditionally referred to because of its general similarity to that of the ammocoete larva of lampreys.

Chromosomes of the lancelet,Branchiostoma floridae (order amphioxi)

Experientia, 1971

Laboratory Culture of the Oriental Lancelet Branchiostoma belcheri

Zoological Science, 2007
To overcome difficulties in getting research materials of cephalochordate lancelets, which has severely hampered experimental studies of this animal, we have attempted to establish a culture system in the laboratory. Adult animals collected from the wild were maintained in 2.5-L plastic containers filled with natural seawater without sand substratum ...

Early development of the peripheral nervous system in a lancelet species

The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1998
The developmental pattern of the lancelet (amphioxus) peripheral nervous system from embryos to larvae has been studied by using wholemount immunostaining and transmission electron microscopy. The peripheral nerves first appeared on the anterior dorsal surface of the medulla at the middle neurula stage, when the anterior nerve cord was just closing.

Monoamines in the brain of the lancelet, Branchiostoma lanceolatum

Cell and Tissue Research, 1981
Three types of monoamine-containing neurones and fibres can be discriminated in the brain of the lancelet. Two types of elongated cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons, located in the ventral and the dorsolateral part of the brain, exhibit formaldehyde-induced catecholamine fluorescence. These neurones contain dense-core vesicles 75-100 nm in diameter.

Cytochcmical studies of oocyte growth in the lancelet, Branchiostoma caribaeum

Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1963
1. The general pattern of RNA and protein yolk synthesis in growing lancelet oocytes was similar to that encountered in most animal groups; i.e., after an initial period of increasing concentrations of cytoplasmic and nuclear RNA, these declined coincident with the initiation of protein yolk synthesis. 2. As the cytoplasmic concentration

The absorption efficiency and respiration rate of the Florida Lancelet, Branchiostoma floridae

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2009
The present study investigates some aspects of the digestive biology and physiological energetics of the Florida lancelet, Branchiostoma floridae. Florida lancelets are able to remove 47.2-56.9% of the energy from a diet of mixed algae. The respiration rate is 0.100mL O(2) (STPD) h(-1) g(-1) (wet), which estimates a metabolic rate of 0.248 J h(-1), at ...
