Abstract Homology in vertebrate body plans is traditionally ascribed to the high‐level conservation of regulatory components within the genetic programs governing them, particularly during the “phylotypic stage.” However, advancements in embryology and molecular phylogeny have unveiled the dynamic nature of gene repertoires responsible for early ...

Repeated hurricane disturbance has minimal impact on shallow coastal infaunal communities
Abstract Disturbances are important drivers of seafloor community structure and diversity, especially in sediment infaunal communities with limited mobility. Shallow coastal sediment communities contribute to global nutrient cycling and carbon storage but also experience large‐scale disturbances, including storms.

Comparative 3D‐anatomy of Appendicularian Endostyles (Tunicata, Chordata) ‐ A Tale of Reduction
Appendicularia are chordates that possess endostyles, a pharyngeal gland homologous to vertebrate thyroid. Here, we describe the detailed 3D‐anatomy of endostyles based on light‐ and electron microscopy. We identified seven cell types arranged in specific patterns.

Lancelets, known also as amphioxus, are protochordates that share common archetypal features with vertebrates. Recently, several developmental and molecular biology studies have pointed out homologies between anatomical structures of lancelets and ...

Abstract The deep‐sea demersal fish fauna is characterized by a prevalence of elongated‐body forms with long tapering tails. Using baited camera landers at depths of 4500–6300 m in the Pacific Ocean, we observed multiple instances of backward swimming using reverse undulation of the slender body in four species: the cutthroat eel Ilyophis robinsae ...

Gene Duplication and Alternative Splicing as Evolutionary Drivers of Proteome Specialization
Gene duplication and alternative splicing expand the proteome, enabling ancestral genes to shape cell type evolution without jeopardizing their ancestral role. But how, exactly? In this piece, we propose that expression and functional specialization are key, underappreciated fates for paralogous genes and alternative isoforms throughout animal ...

Feeding habits and habitat selectivity of the shortnose guitarfish, Zapteryx brevirostris (Chondrichthyes, Rhinobatidae), off north Argentina and Uruguay [PDF]
Dietary shifts with predator’s size, maturity stage and season and bottom type selection of Zapteryx brevirostris were evaluated, using generalized linear models.

The Concept of Neuroglia ‐ the State of the Art Circa 1900
Main Points Retzius, Lenhossek, Weigert, Held illuminate glial research circa 1900. English translations provided. They analyze glia during vertebrate evolution, including human, and relate it to development. They compare grey and white matter, glial relationships to vessels, brain surface.

The heart, a secondary organ in the control of blood circulation
Abstract Circulation of the blood is a fundamental physiological function traditionally ascribed to the pressure‐generating function of the heart. However, over the past century the ‘cardiocentric’ view has been challenged by August Krogh, Ernst Starling, Arthur Guyton and others, based on haemodynamic data obtained from isolated heart preparations and

Establishing a laboratory colony of the Japanese lancelet (amphioxus) [PDF]
Despite an intelest of long standing in the origin and evolution of vertebrates, recent contribution of studies on lancelets(amphioxus),cephalochordates,to this field is not much. One of the major reasons for this is difficulties in applying effective ...
